E60 Cold and Dark ... K-CAN Issue

Hey all,

I got in a e60 2005 530i recently that was stone dead apart from doors unlocking, parking lights, hazards and steering adjusting

*Terminal 30 show 12.83v
*Terminal 15 remains dead regardless of position of key
*Cluster Dead
*Radio and Idrive Dead

I can connect to OBD and access the various modules but cannot activate anything that relies on Terminal 15

DME Scan reveals:
1) Battery voltage 62.89v
2) Code D904 CAS K-CAN line fault

I discovered that the alternator cable was disconnected - attempting to reconnect resulted in a shower of sparks - alternator dead short

Even with key off - something is holding the DME open as the idle control valve continues to buzz.

What I have done:

1) Left alternator disconnected
2) I swapped out the ignition key sensor (screwed to back of switch) - no change.
3) Checked all fuses and relays
4) Disconnected IBC
5) Disconnected MPM

My thoughts:

1) One of the modules is corrupting the K-Can Line (will start unplugging one by one tomorrow)
2) CAS/EWS/Key is faulty and not activating T15

 Your thoughts?

 Cheers

Immobilizer/Alarm module ?

Looking at swapping out the CAS/DME and Key - waiting for a lockset to become available

Thanks

That car still has diamond key?

I think CAS is ok if it unlocks doors, same for the gateway. But with a duff MPM, nothing on the dash will switch on. Admittedly, my experience is limited on preface E60, but I would try source another MPM.

Thanks Gert - According to my homework the MPM shouldn't affect the primary systems (just the IDrive and ICE) - Ive also bridged the MPM as detailed on another forum and still no joy - terminal 15 rermains dead

Kind regards

Aaaaah ok. Kcan faults arise from two reasons. Either there’s an actual fault on the Kcan line interfering with comms or that fault comes up because half the modules aren’t responding because they’re not powering up. The second one seems more likely.

That being said, I had an interesting issue with an E60 from a panel beater: car exhibited similar issues to yours; after a lot of messing around it turned out the two plugs in the roof was stopped around. One plug for interior light and one for alarm. Same 8 pin connector, but different colors. This pulled down the Kcan bus as it was plugged into the interior light instead of the alarm. The two plugs were right next to each other.

Probably not the fault in your case, but shows how easy it is for a car to become totally unresponsive because of a totally innocent mixup which took a lot of time to track down.

It can possibly be the CAs as it has a few Terminal 15 outputs. The reason I asked if it’s a diamond key or fob, is because it’s a fob then I’ve got a CAs/fob you can borrow to test. I don’t have a diamond key set though.

Thanks again Gert for your insight ... Its a 2005 model so diamond key ... I have a mate with a 525i M54 that might be able to lend his DME/CAS and Key for testing purposes

Cheers
