E60 530d Vibration Damper

Noticed a problem with a sometimes tight steering wheel, and a/c compressor sort of locking.

Have just found the vibration damper pulley has wore the inner rubber out completely, allowing it move in and out and worse still not providing drive at times.

The 2nd issue that I have is that there emanates a high pitched whine - sounds like a siren - from about 1400 rpm onwards.

Any pointers ?

Is the whine turbo related? Extra rowdy turbos are not a good sign. Hope the experts can add value.

Definetly sounds like vibration damper.

Replace as soon as possible before you left stuck on the side of the road.

Common problem in E90 330d and X5s as well.

On my ex 330d it costed around 10k fitted.

Replaced the damper wwith a new one. IMHO, there is a design flaw with the ac belt being of a self tightening unit, thus causing undue stress on the vibration damper.

As for the turbo whine, it seems like the turbo is kaput - Bought another turbo - it is now a queation of getting it fitted

If i understand you correctly, you mention that the self tightening ac belt, causes issues with the damper?

Estimates on these parts that you have replaced?

A tad over R7.5k for the vibration damper, +/- R200 for the a/c belt, R1.5k for the labour.

Now for the turbo........:argh:

On a critical component eg Vibration Dampers/Turbo etc , I prefer to get the same from ath stealership, and fitment at a MIWA/RMI Workshop. Thus if there is a major consquential failure, you have a leg to stand on.

A worn/out of balance vibration damper can cost you your crankshaft/complete engine at times.

I therefore feel that it is a small price to pay for the comfort of being able to have it covered by a full on warranty.

IMHO, the ac pulley is on the right side of engine, and with the belt being of the self-tightening type, there is no equal but opposite pull on the damper/crankshaft pulley - This would cause the wear on the rubber backing

You would buy your garret turbo from the stealers :fencelook: :fishwack:

A lot of OEM parts are simply rebranded for BMW. If you know which these are then you'd be silly to buy from the dealer. Like Dieselfan said Garret directly supply BMW with turbo's. Get yours from garret direct you'll save a pretty penny :)

True, but while it may be a Garret Turbo it may have brackets and small adjustments to make it fit.

But wouldnt you agree that those small adjustments are most certainly worth it. Since a garret turbo is lets say around R12 000 and one from BMW is R25 000 + ?

I could not agree with you more!!! Just saying that as it is garret turbo, it may not necessarily be a straight bolt on. I have had this experience with my Jeep Diesel. Stealers are insanely expensive or just don't have the part. The OEM manufacturers parts are sliiigghhhttly different, just enough so they don't fit.
