E46 Towbar

What to fit? I need a towbar, the BMW one's price brings a tear to my eye, Bosal as well, seems the harness required is pretty pricey as well...
What is so special about this harness? Can a lightplug not be connected directly to the various wires in the boot? Will a trailer lights bring up fault codes? I am fitting LED taillights to my trailer, extremely low power requirement, should not cause hassles with the check system. Alternatively I can build a relay box that takes power from the battery, and just uses the car's taillights to switch the relays, which is even less draw than a LED system..
Then the towbar, where to buy at a reasonable price? Seems when you say it is for a BMW the price doubles.....

Fit the proper BMW removable one. Then you can remove it when not needed

I don't mind if it stays there, makes a good buffer too...had some clown ride into the back of my E36, his bumper was finished, not a mark on my car....

I sold mine a while ago for R750. If you are not lucky enough to get one for such a good price, try Autobar in Pretoria. Ensure that whoever does the job, does not cut the bumper.

Steelite used to make a removable one for the e46 - I had one on my 328. Very nice, could not see the mounting plate underneath at all if the hitch section was off. Only it was not a 5 second on/off thing - you needed to unbolt 4 major bolts but it was done in 5 min. Check with them if they still do it.

If anyone has the removal type and is interetsed in selling please let me know.

Kurt - I have the normal type that I will then sell to you - sorry for the mini-high jack.

Still have the removable one on their website.....wonder what it costs, will phone on Friday, interesting to know, although I use a towbar quite often to tow trst bikes around, removing and refitting all the time would just be a PIA.....
