E46 Sub Frame Issues

Hey guys,

What are your thoughts/experience on the rear subframe on the e46 M3? It would have been abused more because it's an M car, but would it have been strengthened accordingly?

Thanks

The E46 M3's also crack. There was a class action lawsuit in the states and an amnesty was passed where by all cars, in warranty or not could come in for an inspection and have repairs performed for free if needed.
This has however expired.

BMWSA has also performed repairs on out of warranty cars, but its pretty rare.

So how does one convince BMW to reinforce the subframe for free???

BMWSA denies such an issue exists. One of the forum mebers did take it up with BMWSA about 2 - 3 years ago but not much happened.

Good luck

vert is floppy so i would expect the forces to be transmitted elsewhere... also i think there is thicker metal put there on the vert :)

As far as i know this was only an issue on the earlier e46's, ie the 328i, 323i.

Some earlier model M3's also had subframe issues but as far as i know that was due to a lot of hard launches etc.

Think the e46 vert is fine

I did an extensive repair and re-inforce on Jez a couple of months ago.

Chris has got pics.

WHat we ended up doing was welding in a hectic set of square tubing across the back end, and integrated the bracket to include a brace that goes onto the shock towers.
