E46 Stepstronic Trans Box, Help

Good day Team Bimmer,

Please Help. I own a E46, 328i 1999 Model.

Almost a year ago, it started jumping gears (from a third gear to forth and firth then a gearbox inspection light would come on) but after switching off the engine and back on again the error would disappear..... I was told that my box needs a recon, and about 3 months back it stopped moving.

The past week end I started the car and let the engine heat up, then put it on Reverse and it started moving. Put it on drive and it drove so well with lots of power.

sorry but you have a +-30k recon bill coming your way.

I had a 330i that i had to to the same thing to.

if you remove the battery for 10 mins it resets the faults. this is fine till it picks the same issue up and then the gear light next to the D comes up again. or you can change the box to manual.

i would strongly recommend that you get the actual fault codes using INPA or from someone with a scanning tool that can access the gearbox ECU..before writing it off.

about 2 years ago i was getting a gearbox fault light randomly and the car would run in a safety mode (would only pull off in 3rd, and cruise in 5th).
when putting into reverse gear, it would jerk the car madly with a crazy thud noise.

4 out of the 5 places i took it to, told me that the gearbox was KO'd and would need recon or replacement.

The last place i went to, managed to read the actual code, which then showed that the neutral safety switch was KO'd. i replaced the switch, and the car was 100's...been fine since.

Your car may have a different issue.. but dont trust anyone who says it needs a recon without diagnosing it properly.

I contacted ZF regarding the same issues, for a fully recon box they charge 22k, but fault find they charge 550.00, if you book the car in by them the 550.00 will fall away.

From what i was the told the valve bank is the 1st thing they check and have tested
i still need to take my car there once i saved up enough to have the box redone
