E46 preventative parts replacing

Hey guys.

So I love replacing parts on the car for preventative measures.

So I was wondering if its a good idea to replace the head gasket rather than waiting for it to go, just to make sure everything is in well working order?

Also I am wondering what else I can replace just to make sure everything is sound?

The car is the 330i with 154K on the clock, have replaced the disa with the aluminium one, parks replaced, tappet cover gasket/seals replaced, fuel pump, fuel filter, pcv with all pipes, the pipe behind the maf that cracks, vanos seals.

Your love will cost you a new set of head bolts.
It will equally cost you a new head gasket set as well as the famous head gasket.

If you feed your car BMW antifreeze in the correct ratio the head gasket will be ok for another 100000ks.

Rather look at suspension brakes steering rack steering pump alternator door seal paint BUT leave the head alone.

.....just saying.

Thanks alex.

I think my steering pump might be leaking because I have to top it up every week, so will have a look there.

The pump will be ok all things being equal what will likely require looking at will be the hoses.

As rubber ages it leaks especially power steering fluid which is very thin

Please don't do this.

The chance is good that your average shop will probably stuff up your block while removing the head.
Just keep the car well cooled.

On this, have you changed the radiator, radiator hoses, expansion tank, coolant level sensor, temp sensor in the radiator hose, waterpump and thermostat? The cooling system is always a good place to do preventative maintenance. Just remember to use a 50/50 mix of BMW coolant and distilled water.

Idler and deflection pulleys. V-belts. Waterpump.
Powersteering tubes becomes hard an tend not to make a good seal. Replaced mine at 285k kms.
Guibo if there are drivetrain vibrations.
Thermostat housing seal.
Alernator bearings.
These work hard if you :joy: a bit hard...

Thanks!!

Never even thought of the guibo, will replace that along with the center prop shaft bearing.
What did you pay for your tubes for the powersteering?

If it hasn't been replaced, might be a good idea to replace the coolant expansion tank, as they tend to get brittle and crack.

I replaced the return hose to the reservoir. About R700 from BMW.

If you replace the center bearing make sure that you mark and align the propshaft before you take it apart so that you can mate it perfectly after.
'
If you do not I shall guarantee you vibration

Replaced the brake oil today, drained 250ml from each bleeder nipple, then replaced the oil again then moved to next nipple including clutch, oil that came out looked like old blood..

There seems to be alot of oil under the car, especially gearbox, is it possible with with the steering loosing oil that the wind is spreading it all over with speed? How do i check gearbox oil level?
