E46 misfire

just thought i would share with you all what i had to deal with this friday morning :=):

I started my car and i felt some unusual vibration, so i turned off the radio and my car did not sound right, i revved it and the car sounded like a petrol lawnmower with some very serious vibration. i drove the car a bit and it was extremely low on power.

so me being very stressed out about this i drove straight to my mechanics place worried that this problem is gonna cost an arm and a leg to resolve.

we connected up the computer and it was reading a misfire with a "multiple ignition coil failure" but upon reading the errors it was only showing ignition coil #1 failure.

turns out this is a common problem with the e46? anyway i had the part replaced with a new bosch part for only R600, and it took 5 minutes to have it replaced.

I wouldn't say it's massively common, I've owned two e46's over 8 years and neither have had this issue, but the coil pack failure is one of the easier problems to diagnose. Easily fixed. Glad you got it sorted.

Well to be fair your 323i still had the old generation coils that are about as reliable as a wood burning stove.

Problems only really came on the newer generation coils.

I posted a few days ago about replacing all six on the E46! The old coils were the grey pencil type which is somewhat known to fail eventually. Replaced one of them some years ago when there was a slight stutter or misfire at low revs when accelerating. And now one of the others started to act up, so decided to just bite the bullet and replace the lot of them! The new ones are the better one piece type construction as you would find in a newer E90 etc.

My father in law's Z4 also had to have new coil packs a while back, but in his case, the coils failed properly! He started the car up one morning and it soon became clear that there was something wrong, but being on the way to work he couldn't do anything about it until later. He was also hoping that it would clear or be not as bad coming home, but it was running on fewer cylinders than normal. It turned out that 3 of the coils had failed completely, and safe to say the rest were not too far off! In fact, since he kept these old coil packs, I tried to use them to see if I could identify and confirm which of the E46 coil packs was faulty, but it seemed like all of those coils were faulty, and bad!

Anyway, glad you got it sorted out!
