Quick update

Shimms were done and surprisingly they weren't badly out of spec. A whole lot was replaced in the end and the result is pure sweet and smooth and silky quiet idle :)

Next up will be vanos followed by new BMW LSD FM oil refresh.

I should be able to monitor fuel consumption improvements with each individual improvement being made.

Oh yes and Inspection II to be completed as well. Oil and filters already acquired.

*Edit pics added of shimming

Following the valve clearances I have been urging to get the car in good shape and enjoying her more for it.

Today I changed the diff oil while im waiting for the outstanding vanos plate seals to arrive.

I was suspecting the old oil to be in an atrocious condition. Funnily it seemed to still be somewhat clear. Although very dark red in colour. Smelling almost like atf.

Anyways I found the last 2 litres of liqui moly full synth 75w140 lsd oil at R550 per liter. As bmw didn't have theirs in stock at present. Thought i would give this stuff a go and give some feedback after a tank or 2 of driving.

There was a diff whine noticeable at highway speeds but only barely. Im hopeful that it will now be cured.

Ive managed to find a complete set of shocks and springs for the car as well and that should give the car even more youth :)

Vanos still to be done. Hopefully this month.

Another update

I managed to get rear springs and all round shocks from another E46M3. The shocks are pretty tired so decided not to use them.

I do however have a complete Z4M suspension which I stripped and measured. The shocks and springs fit on the rear but the springs dont give the correct ride height.
The Z4M shocks work a charm though.

Note the 3 different colour codings on which seem to be identical springs. identical in size but not use.

I took the car for a test drive and the back end is so much more predictable and happy. The diff oil worked properly for the first time today since I changed it.

Diff whine is virtually gone and the tail can happily slide once again. I am amazed at how much of a difference the oil actually made.

Ride comfort is at acceptable levels now as well. The low rider feel doesn't do it for me.

Next up front springs and vanos :)
