I am at the coast and know of a gentleman with an M2 so if anyone is willing to 'borrow' their M3 I would be happy to do the test (not because I want to because I cannot think of anything worse to do than race 2 M cars over and over which both have straight sixes and intoxicating sounds and and and but in the interest of science and because you guys begged I am willing to do it on a closed circuit under controlled conditions)....

I think everybody is looking at this in the wrong way. It's very difficult to choose between the two in theory with a lot of hypothetical situations coming up. Will it be your daily, will it be your weekend car, will the E46 be a museum example, will you track it, etc, etc.

I remember my younger cousin once asked me, and I know this is slightly different, but very similar, my first E36 M3 was parked next to my dad's E90 335I when they first came out 8/9 years ago, the 335I was an epic car and there was a lot of hype surrounding it, still is, and at the time even stock was killing everything. He asked me which car I would take?
I thought about it and there was no definitive answer: so I basically outlined it to him like this:

- If it was a car I was only to drive for one day and then neither of them ever again, I would take the E36 M3!! And this to me summed up my actual feelings about which car I preferred and actually really loved.

For me that was the best way to look at it taking price, value now, and all of the other factors out of it.

So let's look at it that way and in my mind it shows which car is loved more.

If you could drive one of them for a day, a perfect E46 M3, or a new M2, and then neither of them ever again, which one would it be?:=):

Look, e46 was a great car, 16 years ago. It still is very desirable. No doubt.

The new generation M cars however have developed and improved over the years.

The nokia 6110 was was a great phone in 2000, robust and worked well. For 2016 however, the smart phone is where its at.

Similarly, M car technology has developed over the years, for the better.

It easy reviewing and shooting down the M2 after a keyboard test drive. Drive the car, u will be pleasantly surprised.

New Gen BMW's rock !

I find it hard to get emotional over cell phones... cars are a very emotional thing for me

its really not as simple as upgrading to the newest cell phone the two do not directly compare cell tech was in its infancy 15 years ago and progression is much faster on electronics than automotive

I am most definitely not saying there is no progress at the M division that would be very narrow minded
im just saying as an enthusiast and treating a car as an emotional item I can understand choosing between the two can be difficult and nether choice can be discounted as they are both valid

Bud, I drive a close-to-20-year old 5 series.

If you put me in a V-tec I would be pleasantly surprised ;)

Let me just say this: I am not putting the M2 down, all I am saying is that to ME, the E46 is the more desirable car. I might be mad, or I might be turning into one of those old fogies who are delusional about the "olden" days. Either way, I am just some cunt on the internet, and my opinion is just my opinion, and please don't take offence.

OR

If you want to convince me, let me take a test drive in your M2 :)

The wheel arches and the brute look which u can see in the sunlight don't come through on photos. The colour doesn't even come through on the photos.

I will admit that the M2 is my second favourite of the new "small" Ms, in terms of appearance.

You will need a double blind test, to account for bias, I volunteer as tribute.

@vuk - no offence taken. Now that u brought up VTec - S2000 at full tilt screaming its N/A glory, now thats a sound to behold.

@Sean - im a tech geek and car enthusiasts, maybe that's why I brought up cell phones and maybe also why I like the new gen BM's so much.

Controlling my GoPro via my IDrive for me is as exciting as dragging a 400m and screaming exhaust notes.

For a lot of purists the naturally aspirated M cars will still be the ultimate. With the new generation of M cars a new generation of purists are born. A few years from now, guys like Reese will be having this discussion with a new generation of purists, possibly arguing electric cars are the best thing since sliced bread...

I for one, love the S54 and S85 engines, bearing problems and all. It's all about the noise...

The M2 is a beautiful looking car, but I would take my M Coupe over that any day. :coolShake:

As mentioned.... 15 years of technology between the two, personally thought the M2 would be there much quicker than the e46, so the old girl in my view still hauls - in fact it looked to me that it was quicker 0 to 80 then was slower in the 80 - 140/150 area then seemed to get faster after that to 200. Maybe just a figment of my imagination....:tiptoe:
M3 was definitely quicker to 100, then slower the rest of the way.

Would take the E46 over the F87, if for nothing more than the sound in the M3 is real sound, not generated through the speakers.

Please tell me how you came to this comment? I assume you read a magazine?
I have an M2 and I can promise u the car sounds amazing. Through the exhaust not the speakers. The sound of the car is intoxicating. People who are facing away from you turn around to see what's coming when u are a block away still. And in the flesh when u are actually driving it the feel is incredible.
If anyone wants to see a stock e46 M3 get a hiding of note please race an M2.
That video is not a true reflection of the cars it's bs

Post to follow later with my M2

I agree e46 m3 will get slaughtered by a m135 never mind a m2
