E46 M3 traction control

Just wondering if the traction control is different on the M3 or normal E46 models. My old 325ci I could press once and "half" turn it off (just the dsc light would show), or hold for a few seconds and completely turn it off and then the hand brake warning would show yellow as well as the dsc light.
With the M3 it doesn't put the hand break warning sign if I hold down, just the dsc light. Is it completely off if just pressed once? To be honest I'm a little too scared to find the limits without any traction control, until I get the car on a track.
However I find it cutting in much too early, braking the wheels and it feels horrible. I'm still getting used to the car, but I find it interfering early than a couple of weeks ago? Just looking for a bit more freedom before it reels me in.

The physical systems on the M3 versus the other E46 models are the same (the calibration may be different). On the E46, there were 2 different systems - MK20 from the early years, MK60 was introduced later on.

MK20 supports Stability Control either on or off. MK60 supports DTC (allows wheel slip, but intervenes if the car starts over or under-steering) and Stability Control off. MK60 was incorporated in M3s at some point between 2002/3.

From your description, your 325i had the MK60 DSC system, your M3 has the MK20.

With the E46 M3 your traction is on or off regardless of year model :coolShake:

There is actually a way to enable m-track mode on later models, a sort of 2 stage traction control, the first stage of which is a more relaxed version of the default traction control. It's the same as is on the CSL.

+1
On my '06 that I had as well as my '02 E46 M3, it was either on or off, no in between.

Thanks for all info everyone, much appreciated :ty:
Guess its time man up and get used to traction totally off (but never in the wet again :skit:). The MK60 system was nice as it allowed a bit of fun, but pulled you in when you started getting sideways and totally out of control. The MK20 kicks in too early and most times its due to poor road conditions/bumps really. Easy fix=turn off.

just be quick with that steering when it comes back across bud

Yeah really quick! Still learning, but it's amazing how fast you must be. Looks so easy when the pros are doing it

Good thing you didn't get the e36. The traction control in that car is between the seat and steering wheel
