E46 M3 SMG Gear problem

Hi guys, I have a problem with selecting gears on both auto and manual.
The problem first started when I moved it into reverse and the display would just flash N or R on different occasions, if I put it into 1st or 2nd the car was driveable with no issues.
I then disconnected the battery for a few hours and tried reverse again, after several attempts of moving from 1st to reverse it finally displayed R without flashing, when I tried reversing the car went forward. :argh:
I tried moving the car forward again and noticed the car felt very sluggish, when I tried changing gears up it would move to 2nd & 3rd, 3 lacked a lot of power and would flash on the display, when I stopped the car and tried moving off again the gears jumped into 5th with a loud bang which seemed to come from the gearbox.
My investigations on the internet point to the gear position selector, can anyone please confirm if this is the cause of my problem and also recommend where I could get the selector at a reasonable price?

Any info will help, thx fellow fanatics

Hi there

I have a similar problem that started on friday.
The smg cog on dash is lit up and the car will not select any gears.

Disconnected the baterry for and a few minutes and then all works perfectly.

From what I read it could be the relay or the gear position sensor.

The car is going in on monday to rear the errors on obc.....

The mech said its most likely the gear position senor but will update the post once its confirmed.

Hi Flyhid

Thx for the reply, I have already changed he relay, and also tried the old one with the same results, I'm hoping it's not the gear position sensor as the price on realoem is almost 400USD

Pls keep me posted, I'll do the same

Damn :nonono: , just called BMW Northcliff, R5130 with a 10% discount, also tried Diesel Electric but their systems are down, they are usually cheaper, will try again later.
