Once again what is the point then?!!:hammerhead: The engine in an E46 M is one of the main aspects that makes the car!! Go buy a GT86 or Corolla and put your 2jz in there!:coolShake:
[/quote]

it is fantastic..i really enjoy it..the whole car is but i am not going to buy a M3 & then spend R30k plus to do bearings because it will break..so i will have a great car with a good motor
[/quote]

Where in the world did you come up with that figure??....

The 4.2 V8 engines of the Audi has timing chain issues.

Its an engine out affair to rectify and just as risky if left unattended as bearings on the S54.

I would go for the C55 if you want reliability.

To those who say the C55 is boring, I am pretty sure 90% of those people have never actually driven one. I like them, and would seriously consider buying one in the future.

Or never really turned off all the nannies.

the c55 is fun…wasn't aware of the audi issue..thats sucks….people here are going to hate this but i really love the e46 m3 & if i were to get 1 it would have a 2jz under the hood:sorry:

The 2JZ is actually a lovely powerplant, and an E36 or E46 M3 Chassis actually works out to be the perfect platform for it.

People get all butthurt over engine swaps but if you have the means and the desire to do something, why would you let internet opinions stop you?
as long as you're happy with the end result and feel you got your moneys worth and your car isn't up on bricks.. go for it.

what is the figure approximately if I by a well looked after one and just one the bearings changed for peace of mind , do want only replace bigends on a good motor with no knock , I seem to remember we use to have certain model bikes who were known to eat their cranks ,so when you bought one of these bikes you usually just changed the bigends to know that you should not be getting knocks because you treated the motor as if you had it from brand new.
anyways who in Cape Town does this bearing change .

It was me that said the C55 is boring.

120000km over 3 years, yes it was quick and took a few ///M's for a walk but it remains a 'disconnected' car to drive.

hi to all M3 owners out there.
I would like to know as a few other fanatics out there that after finding a clean E46 M3[I want one] ,do I tell the seller he/she should drop the price by approximately r30 gees ,because I will have to change the bearings for peace of mind ... it would not be nice squaring up to a turbo hatch at the intersection and before you hooked 4th gear your race is over because of a conrod poking through the block .Now it seems as if the next M ie E92 suffers the same fate. What do I replace my M3 E36 with , I have now started looking at AUDI S4 [B7 V8 ] and even MERC c32 AMGs which seem to offer good bang for your buck in relation to what it cost to buy a e46 M3 at the moment. Does anybody know if those V8 quatrro audies of the same era [2003 -2006] give any bearing or other motor problems. Another thought struck my mind , did those Ms with bearing knock issues have the correct amount of oil in them when the problem occurred .I am of opinion that maybe one should not just worry about what brand of oil be used but also is the sump filled everytime you go drive , which with most of these car is usually on the fast side.
My e36 M had a substantial mechanical repair /restore in 2010 when my friend owned the car with me sitting with the slips adding to r62 g .I actually covered less than 20 000 k since I owned it after the repairs .So do I keep my car and just admire the later models from a distance or buy that AUDI S4 instead , cant afford to keep my M and another performance car.

hmm , I think that newer model M3 purchase is going to be more a one of the heart and not the head , cnat drive a performance car slowly just to prevent it going boom .The strange thing is the fastest car I was driven in [indicated 280kph ] was a white e46 M3 [are white ones faster] with over 190 000 on the clock and the car was not a very neat example of the breed at the time , but did that car go . I have never been in any e90 M at that speed , all of them stopped on the limiters at about 260 ish .
To throw a spanner in the works what problems can I expect with the SMG version , there is a very good example with documented history [and it is white ] that I can buy for what I consider a good price against similar condition manual with higher milage , this car actually just clocked 130 000 with two previous owners who don't seem as if they ever done over 120 km/h with the car.
Is there any preventative maintenance measures on these SMG s , because I noticed that they seem to always going into limp mode when dragged at Killarney 1/4 mile street to strip.
Another thing is who in Cape Town can do a bearing job on these cars except Zeemax and the franchised dealers.

take it to Anton Slabbert. APS in Stikland.. it is worth your money spent.

Hi

Give me some insight when you say disconnected as i have owned an E46 M3(awesome car) and currently own a C55.
they both totally different cars but i cant say the C55 is boring.

Sorry guys, but you can not compare a M3E46 with a C55 at all...these are quite different cars for different people...

I agree it is a somewhat irrelevant comparison. They are just so different in character and purpose.

I feel that the E46 M was designed as an engaging car from the outset. When driving one, the car is in constant communication with you. It gives feedback in a way I have not experienced in any other car.

The C55 is like sitting on a locomotive. It does what you want it to, but I never really felt like the car was trying to be anything other than what it evolved into: a bruiser.

It comes down to whats available in the price bracket.

If you really had to compare pricing of good M3's to relevant competitors then it rules out C32's because

Cheap e46M/ C32 = Money pits

So it leaves you with good E46 M's /C55's /Maybe a B7 RS4

Keep the E36M or get a bmw with an N54/N55 engine.

To my experience the 335i is a temperamental car, mine was under motorplan so it didnt affect my pocket, which was a total bill of 280k in just under 2 years i owned the vehicle,if the purchaser is going this route i suggest buy 1 under motorplan.

ok here's my lighter side of comparison with E46 M3 & C55 AMG

E46 M3:

This is best described to me as a hot, sexy, gorgeous slut which oozes sex appeal consistently that a very small percentage of men would not want to get into bed with, shes out there and you know when she enters the room, you feel her presence in every aspect of what she does, you know shes a whore but u just got to have her because you feel more of the man you already are.She is a pure head turner, jaw dropper, that you will get excited about even after banging the crap out of her and then you will still stare at her and say,dam this b*tch is hot...GRRRRR,she is what she is,theres no mystery here,Shes a free spirit

C55 AMG:

This one right here is the pretty, intelligent girl with the glasses, long hair and you will have to introduce in public as she is more the conservative type, once you enter the bedroom thats when another side of here to comes out, once undressed she is now the one in sexy lingerie, leather oufits and becomes a mad b*tch ready to release all you mind boggling fantasies when she flicks her switch, now you in for the other part of her that will leave you think WTF just happened, once all that is over she will then proceed to be completely unknown again until you decide i need the other, this situation is controlled by you!!!!

these comparatives are based on my two cars with the following extras added
E46 M3: Software & De-Catt
C55 AMG:Headers & De-Catt

Anyways whichever one you go for you will find pleasures but in 2 different realms.

Goodluck with your choice
