e46 loose wire

Hi gents, I recently bought an e46 330d (2003) and I have noticed there is a loose wire hanging under the car on the right hand side near the right rear wheel. It looks like its in the same sleeve as the brake sensor but I'm not sure. Its a brown and black wire, here is a pic of it:

Does anyone know what this possibly is? The brake light is on, but that might be due to the worn out pads and the PDC does not work, it gives that long beep when shifting to reverse.

Looks like the remains of your rear brake pad sensor, often guys don't refit it correctly and it can get caught on the sideshaft which coils it up and rips it off. Looks to be the case here. Unplug the remains of the old sensor wire and fit a new sensor, use cable ties to fasten it down if all the plastic fastening tabs are broken off the trailing arm.

That does indeed look like the case, I dont even see a sensor in the pad. Does the e46 also only have one sensor for the rear? there are wires going to each wheel at the rear but it does not go in near the calipers, its on the opposite side of where the caliper sits, is that a speed sensor or something?

oh I see thank you! :=):

Just to be clear. The wire to each wheel is the abs sensor. extra one should be brake pad wear sensor as the other posts said.
