E46 Engine number location

Hi guys. Where is the engine number stamped onto the block of a 2000 E46 323i? The inspector doing the COR seems to be looking at the incorrect number and says the number belongs to two other vehicles (doesn't make sense, I know). That is impossible as the vehicle was purchased from new and the motor was not replaced at any point during ownership.

Hi, the same thing happened to me.
Went for roadworthy after i bought the car, and the Idiots say the motor was replaced etc.
They say to me that i have to remove the Sump/engine cover at the bottom and drive like that to a place where i can get it checked out, anyway.
I went to an autoquip to get it lifted took a while for us to find it, im to clued up on all the technical details but basically if your under the car to your left side, its stamped somewhere there in the middle, just take a flashlight or a torch on your phone if you have one.

Just giving my 2c worth, sorry if its not useful :/
