Hey all.

Any reason why these vehicles seem to be going so "cheap"...? E46s are around the R60K mark and the E90s around the R80K mark. All around the 200K kms mark with fsh (mostly).

Always thought the diesels would hold value longer...?

TIA.

Do you have objective reasons for your "thoughts"?

Personally I wouldn't pay top dollar for high mileage cars which are around the 20 year old mark. A lot of them are in fact over the 200k km mark and cosmetically not looked after. Couple that with the fact that diesel specific parts are still expensive (injectors, high pressure diesel pump) and the likelihood that these items will require attention due to the age and high mileage.

Suspension refreshes are another costly exercise.

Then there's the fact that the market is flooded with 20d's.

Suddenly it doesn't seem viable to overspend on the purchase price of such a car.

PS : I am also yet to see that the majority of all these old / high mileage 20d's have a full service history.

Could also have to do with the amount that are on sale right now. 3 series are very common, that's definitely dropping the price down. Compare it to 120ds, they're demanding higher if not equal price to their comparable 3 series despite being objectively inferior cars. I think it's just a case of supply exceeding demand so the prices dropped quite hard

there is many many cars of this age that has also received a haircut or been written off then repaired and for sale again.
Just make sure you do the homework on the car and check it out properly before you end up with a nasty surprise

Having searched for an E90 LCi 320d (late 2009 to early 2012) for months, the sought after "bulletproof" N47 motor cars are actually holding value and some commanding a premium because it's very hard to find a well maintained clean example.

The models you refer too ie. E46 and prefacelift E90 320d's (M47 motors in both)were not known to be reliable and were plagued with issues that were fixed with the N47. Hence they going dirt cheap.

Thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it.

@Jakes4R I "figured" so seeing that the mileage you get on the diesel is significantly higher (and therefore more economical in the long run) than that of the petrol variant. Yes, the maintenance is a factor over time, but one that I'm sure evens out if properly maintained. With the E90 specifically, it almost hard to believe they're so "cheap". Considering getting me an everyday car, and really leaning towards a diesel, moreso the E46, but the 330d's are like hoender tanne. The one or two available are not in good cond. And I'm really not a fan of the (look of the) E90. But definitely will include the injectors, pump and suspension checks to the checklist👍👍
