As the title says, sometimes when I reverse I hear a loudish clunk / crack noise, it's not depended on speed and usually happens when I start to reverse.
I used to get something similar to this. Everytime I would stick it reverse I would get an audible "ping", apparently it was something to do with my diff.

on an 05 model i would not expect subframe mounting but its worthwhile checking it out. mine tore but i have a 99 model e46 which was known for the subframe issue
could also be diff bushing
put car up on lift at super quick or something and you will know straight away if it is one of those two by looking at them.
diff bushings usually give you a clunk noise when u shift as well

I would also say its quite normal, drove a 318 e46 for two weeks while wating for my car, and noticed it there, and even with my car and the auto box, when you put it in reverse, there a clunk and sometimes when you start reversing there`s another slight thud from the drivetrain as it engages....

Oh I see, one other thing as well that might be related, when suddenly put pedal to medal it feels like the whole gearshifter moves backwards, almost like the gearbox is moving away from the engine??
Put your car on a lift and inspect g'box mountings, diff bushes and the guibo. All of these could cause an issue. Also check the universal joint on the propshaft for excessive play. Also check the engine mountings. All of these can cause a thud.
