Hi guys
I own a e46 218i automatic facelift, I have lately experiencing a strange vibration which transmits noise into the cabin when the gear is in D position and the vehicle is stationery butbas soon as put my foot on the accelerator and start driving the noise/ vibration quiets disappears. And also didappears when the gear is in P or N position...
Can anyone tell me what might the problem be?

Could be many things , could be coils , or a coil that has failed . ( the one that fits on top of the spark plug) Could also be a failed engine mount .
Best you connect it to a PC and read out the fault codes . You dont want to go around changing parts that dont need to be changed .

My son had a E46 320d auto with 229k kms which also had this noise similar to one knocking inside the engine with a hammer when the car was put in drive or reverse. It was relatively quiet when idling and in neutral. After trying numerous ideas, etc., even replacing engine and gearbox mountings (one of the gearbox mountings was completely torn off the rubber) it still did not make a difference. Eventually traced it to the "new" dampener pulley which was about one year old and was out of round. Replaced the pulley with a new one and the knocking sound was gone! Not sure if the petrol engines also have the dampener pulley, though.
