E46 Alternator Light on! Help Please!

My brother drives a 1999 E46 318i (86kw 8v). He came back from Mozambique last night and when he started his car (which has been standing for a week) the alternator light came on. According to the manual, this means that the alternator isn't charging, or that the V-Belt is off.

Well the V-Belt is on. It's a new one. So the alternator is at fault. Phoned my grandfather (who is a long-time mechanic) and he says to change the regulator on the alternator. He was on his way to the doctor, so couldn't explain in detail what to do exactly, but that the regulator should be at the nearest Midas. Thing is, I don't know how to remove the current one. From what he described, it should be on the back of the alternator. I'm not a good DIY guy, so am struggling a bit to find it!

Please help me! My brother is one of those that threatens to sell his car everytime he needs to pump the tyres :nono: So your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is the light on all the time or does it go off when you rev the engine to about 2000RPM?

x 2 to what Freerider said.
