I thought this should've been finished AGES ago, what happened buddy?

Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not doubting your abilities, but compared to a build like Matt's, realistically speaking, how would your build motor stack up reliability wise?

I'm looking forward to loads of pics.

@andrew & sanky, lol dudes, :/ agh, pics will have to do for now ...

@1lum1nat1, I didn't have space to work, and I moved, I only got this car into the garage about 2 weeks ago and I've been waiting on tools, Matt is doing something completely different, all I am doing is cleaning and servicing my motor really, gonna dis-assemble it check what needs to be done, and change bearings, rings, seals and whatever needs to be replaced.. Matt is re-boring his motor, changing compression, doing all sorts of funky things... I am just keeping this car stock standard, as I will drive it for abit while the E39 gets turbo'd and then sell it immediately after that.

OK, sorry for not updating, been sick for just over 2 weeks now. But I'm back in action ...

Just spent some time in the garage taking the rest of the engine appart. lol, Its far less serious than first anticipated ...

GUESS WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS ??? .. lol, the oil pump nut came off... THATS IT.

so now, the bearings are burnt a little, no real damage otherwise. I'm sending the block on monday to get pressure tested and to either re-sleeved or honed, doesn't look at all necesary to re-sleeve it at this point, but maybe the engineering guys will find something I don't see, Like a lump in my wallet, who knows.

new bearings, bolts, some loctite, gasket kit, maybe replace the chains if I feel like it, piston rings and then one big re-assembly mission.

I was way too dirty to take pictures so I will take some when I am clean and have some energy again...

:D

Glad to hear its not to serious (for the time being), with the car fixed up you might turn a healthy profit, if you intend on selling it of course :)

Yea .. I was quite relieved... I will drive it for a month or two, I will most likely sell it in january or february..

I havn't got the engine back from engineering yet, they still busy with it... Only took it on wednesday so thats to be expected I guess... so we will see when I get it back, maybe nextweek. I'm really itching to get this car running again.. I will post some pictures in the week, kinda moody today for some reason...

neways, more details soon.

About time clutch, glad your better :thumb: I got a question for you, do you have any experience with the VAC replacement oil pumps. are they a viable replacement? I read somewhere that it not just the bolt that can come off, the M54B30 produces some harmonic which causes the pumps internals to fail.

Hey Don86 !

I think the VAC replacement is basically just a pulley that they change, I think the vac has 4bolts instead of one. The problem normally is the pulley shears off the oilpump shaft because the splines are very very thin...I was lucky that my bolt just came off.. but its a common problem on the M54's..

I also heard somewhere about harmonic issues on the M54, but I am really not sure what its about, it could be a myth... I'm not 100% sure.. I'll check on the net abit, maybe something is up.. its all possible I guess.

My 330 is sick at the moment, some bushing need replacement and the valve cover gasket needs to be done. I thought I might as well do the vanos, disa and oil pump while im at it.

Having a serious swing of bad luck lately, so I wanna play it safe. :cursin:

dude, changing the oilpump is a son of a bitch movement on the E46, lol. you have basically drop the subframe out of the way to get the sump plate off. so you will need something to hold the engine in place ... but yea, I would recommend the VAC sprocket upgrade ... its a really good idea, oil pump failing can be REALLY bad news... eish, someone on the forum was advertising Vanos units, I think it was actually freerider, maybe give him a PM and ask about the vanos units ..

lol, rather safe than sorry ...

Does the engine oil need to be drained to replace the valve cover gasket? I need to do this asap because one of my plugs was drenched in oil when I did my last service.

negative, you don't have to.. just be real carefull not to mess anything inside the enige.. give it a REAL good clean before you take the cover off

lol, well, everything that looked fine to me, the engineering shop says is fk'ed. quoted me 15K just for the sub assembly.
grind/polish crank
6x new pistons
block skim
resleeve
main bearings, big end bearings, small end ....
clean
fit/machine small ends
resize conrods
linebore block
totals 15K...

I however think they are talking complete rubish, so I'm making another plan ... if it doesn't work out (but I am sure that it will)
then I will maybe put the M60 V8 in the E46 still.. we will see..

Engineering on the Pontiac was 6k

That included
Head skim/check
Rebore block .060guidgen
Cut & Polish crank
acid dip
fit 16 k liners to valves
Cut main bearings
fit new pistons (i supplied) to gudgeon pins/rods

Rick,

They call it a K-Liner - was news to me as well....

over time the valves of course wear out in the seat, and the stem itself. While the stem seal of course is doing its job, the valve is ever so slightly (we are talking microns) too loose, so the k-liner is kind of a coating that they put onto the valve and then grind the valve back into its seat.

Cheaper then 16 valves...
