My E46 328I has a weird rattle it sounds like a Hydraulic lifter but I have to make sure before I take the head off.

Got a Vanos Rattle kit the seals and the bearings that made no change however the old vanos seals where finished.....

Replaced the throttle body,Disa ,PCV and a new MAF No change to the noise

the noise comes and goes very clear under light throttle goes away under heavy throttle

did a compression test cylinder 2 and 5 is slightly below spec..

Had the computer plugged and getting no error codes....

Please help

I would have suggested the DISA valve, but you youve replaced that. Perhaps investigate idlers pulleys and the serpentine belt. My E46 made a horrible combination of noises when the serpentine belt was worn and one of the idler pulley bearings was shot.

Does the sound occur when driving as well as when the car is static, ie: Can you eliminate the drive train from this problem?

Yes the sound is there when the vehicle is stationary definitely not the drive-train used a stethoscope and it seems to be most pronounced between cylinder 5 and 6 around the cam gear but like I said its intermittent goes away if you rev hard but under light throttle it comes and goes.

Hi I had a rattle changed many parts to no avail turned out to be the main crankshaft pulley. It was hard to tell where the sound was coming from seamed like every part was the culprit. Got it fix yesterday now the rattle has gone.
