e46 320D vs e90 320i

best thing about those diesels is you can throw R5000ish into software and have a new car.

but, from my experience, once you are used to petrol, diesel is annoying to drive (havent driven an auto diesel though, wonder if the F30 will have a DCT 320d??)

You comaparing a turbo motor to an N/A motor.
The e46 thusly develops more torque then the N/A 320i motor albeit that the power output is the same for the F/l 320d.

That being said, 1st and 2nd (for the 320d) is very close so you'll open a bit if he has a manual.., 3rd he will come past and 4th you going to start seeing black smoke. ha! ha!

Oh and as for those tangible facts, they kinda wrong. haha
They both 4cylinders, just the D is turbo and the 320i is N/A

Especially if you live up the jhb / pta area, the 320d will take the 320i as is at sea level...

i am guessing this guy is talking 320d vs 320d, no contest betwen e46 320d and e90 320i at all i might add, diesel vs petrol :fishwack::flyfun:

I have driven both, and the torque of the e46 320d makes it noticeably more punchy in real world situations. A 320i is gutless in comparison, regardless of the peak power being similar.

So, in the real world, I have no doubt that an e46 320d will put an e90 320i in its place.

RACE ALREADY !!!
oh, wait b4 you do that, your 320i will need a free flow system, take out the spare wheel and just to be on the safe side, get a NOS system just incase. (This should only be done if you one of those ppl that hate losing and if your friend will throw the loss in your face everytime you see him, shud cost around +-R8000).

Goodluck and let us know wot happened.

I am also voting for the diesel here but let me just add...

diesels are not as fast as they feel, their gears are just to short...

I raced a buddy of mine and we were pretty much equal (and raced a lot, no driver error)
him older Merc, the facelift but I dont know model
C250 diesel, 110kW and 280 torque

me
318is petrol, 103kW and 180 torque

he shouldve smoked me but didnt, my revs go forever compared to his. This while he could easily throw his back out in a corner. Torque does not help you in a normal dice...

M0lten,

You have to look at power-to-weight ratio's for these cars, those Merc's are as heavy as black matter.

The 320d (e46) will eat the 320i (e90) spit it out, then eat it again...

At most a 100kg heavier than me, which should be cancelled out nicely by his 100 newtons of torque more.

I do not say the 320i will win, I am just saying the ass dyno is way of when comparing diesel and petrol. The torque fools you....

Look at the new big bakkies, they feel fast but few of them have a 0-100 of less than 10sec.

The small difference of 0-100 already posted in this thread in the two cars (320i and 320d) shows this as well, (bigger diff in highveld but still), I drive a diesel and its brilliant, but I dont fool myself, its pretty slow when you actually look at the speedo. I have to shift to 4th gear at something like 120kmph already when pushing.

...mine goes from 120km/h to just under 180km/h in 4th... then you still have two left... :joy:

That C250 may put out 110kw at peak boost but it is a very badly balanced turbo / motor combo and everytime you change gear it drops to about 5kw and then you wait a good 2 or more seconds for the turbo to spool up again before you see any kind of power again.

I drove my dads C250 for about three months while we were trying to sell it and I now own a E46 320d F/L and that merc would get thrashed horribly everyday of the week by my 320d.

The 320d may not be the fastest car around but if you know how to drive them properly they move like hell!

I had a E36 328i before my 320d and I thought it was going to irritate the shit out of me but it has not been the case. The 320d is far easier to drive, far more comfortable and if you know what you are doing will still give many cars a serious run for their money.

hey BMW M, mine as well, 3rd, 4th and 5th pulls nicely

sorry for taking the thread of its tracks but what happens to you after 180?
I normally never check out the top end but did once and came back dissapointed... from 190 it struggled, and I only managed 227 in the end.

I am really looking forward to getting it tuned and seeing the difference

Mine is the 135kw motor, so I dont complain. It pulls well up until 220km/h then I go to 6th, then it takes a bit of time to get to 240km/h on the clock. Dont know what true speed is thou. But for a 4 pot diesel, that aint bad IMO. I love this car.

Top speed according to manual is 235km/h... without the power kit. ;)

I agree, trick with the diesel is not redline them, stay in the power band and it shuffels nicely..
