e46 320d oil pump replace help

Hi my turbo went boom because of a failed oil pump. Its a 2001 prefacelift model. When replacing the oil pump is it necessary to remove the injectors as part of the whole oil pump replace procedure. The mechanic working on my car could not get the injectors loose because of carbon build up and had to brake the tappet cover. Just want to make sure this was necessary.
