E46 318i M43 Engine problem

Hi all

i am with the bmw wows these days

2 weeks ago my car stated to make a horrific sound like it was about to blow up i stoped the car and had it towed to a workshop

the mechanic said to me it was just i need to replace my timing chain ,tenshoner and valve lifters he done that now

and the car still sound like the tappets are hitting the tappet cover

Could be that i have main/con-rod bearing frailer if that is the case is cheaper just to buy a second hand M43 engine than trying to fix this one ?

i have already forked out 6 k on the engine am i wasting my time

Hi there

Without a little more info on the actual noise, a recording would be ideal, I'd have a guess that you've one of the following;

1.) You've old oil in your car.
2.) You've got crappy oil in your car - "read Castrol Edge XXXXX"
3.) You've got very low oil in you car.

The tappets in these M43's will make a horrific noise when either of the above are present. Do a proper oil change with decent oil and filter and then fill to 90% capacity and check.

What mileage do you have currently, what can you tell us on the oil currently in the car ?
