Morning all, most likely this has been covered 100's of time, but I need help with the clutch on a 2001 pre face-lift E46 318i.
The clutch has been juddering for some time now, really only a problem in 1st gear. I would like to have it repaired but would like to know what the best way forward is. Is there an aftermarket kit, better than OEM or is OEM the only way to go? When getting quotes what do I need to look out for?
I would appreciate any assistance and advice

Cheers

Luk Makes very good aftermarket kits. Have it installed by professionals like Rex Diff & Gearbox (RDG).

I did a Google search, obviously depends on where you stay. I found a few places, you must ask for quotes as pricing varies from the one to the next.

While I'm investigating the requirements / cost, the shudder is there only a pull off and not that severe but there none the less. My wife who is the primary user of the car is happy to drive around the problem and it does not bother her that much other than when in heavy traffic.

My question is: If we leave it can it result in catastrophic failure or will the clutch just stop working one day and the we deal with it?

Any advice and or criticism is welcome.

Well i had the same problem & the wife also being the designated driver it just been getting worse even with no traffic. Could damage your Flywheel & cost more money.

I bought a LUK kit yesterday & my mechie busy installing it today.

Thanks all, much appreciate the advice, when repairing the clutch does the flywheel get sent for a skim or is there a swap out system. So if I wanted to get all the bits beforehand including the flywheel to save workshop time? Or how does this work?

The clutch and DMF is being replaced today, my mechanic informed that the clutch itself is still good, but the DMF is buggered. The clutch was replaced by bmw under motorplan at 80k, now has 150k. So if anyone needs a clutch, its yours for a case of hunters dry

Radiator hose (bottle to block) is also being replaced
Timing chain cover oil leak also being sorted

Car should be like new after this...
