E39 Pixel problem

Hi

My 2002 E39 M5 has the dreaded pixel problem in the cluster.:thumbdo:

I've seen quite a few DIY fixes on the net, requiring importing a new ribbon. Is there any place in SA that would do such a repair? Has anyone tried the DIY?

Thanks

Very common issue for "High" OBC. The displays are sensitive to heat and direct sunlight and were not made to deal with SA's kind of sun. I know of Combined Electronics in Cape Town that fixes/ replaces them, but it aint cheap. Just google the name. Both my Radio and Instrument cluster displays had to be replaced/ repaired and that cost me R5k, three years ago. Have not tried DIY, but if you comfortable with taking your cluster apart, don't see that it is too difficult a job. You'll probs save a fortune (if you do it right...)

Very intricate job, I messed up one ribbon, hence I got 3 left from a 5 pack:rollsmile:

I've got the instructions as well, most tricky part was removing the needles:yuck:

That's what I'm afraid of! Been doing a lot of research -seems latest view is to forget about removing needles, and drill 4 small holes to get to screws that hold display lcd to cluster. Mohammed, did all your pixels come back? Did you have to replace any bulbs?

Please PM price of ribbons and instructions:thumbs:

Tried that as well, worst than taking off needles , believe me, to drill into a small area like that is not easy, did one hole and decided against that, u got pm

Any updates? My MID also has missing pixels...

Well, to my complete disbelieve, after not driving the beast for 10 days or so, started up and problem disappeared!!! All pixels back and nice and bright!!! Must have been poor contact somewhere that re-contacted itself!!

Well, this lasted for about 20km's or so - I wonder if it has to do with the total combo of pixels used for display - anyway the problem is back!!!

Will pray to BMW gods to make go away again!:praise::praise::praise:
