I have seen it pulled off easily when I had a towbar fitted but that was years ago. You have to undo some fasteners and bolts first. Here is an extract from the E39 service manual.

I fiddled with the volume control before starting up today. What do you know - all of a sudden it works as it is supposed to!

I also had the problem with the radio on my ex 2003 E39 530d. Does seem to be not an uncommon problem.

Another problem I'm having is a rattle coming from the lid that folds down over tape deck of the radio. I wanted to remove the entire radio to see if there's something I can tighten, and I know how to access the lever through the volume knob. I know to only turn it a quarter turn anti clockwise to release the radio, yet the left side of my radio will not unclip...

How can I get through this?

You can try to make sense of what the service manual tells you: :thumbdo:

Lower dash panel assembly, removing and installing

Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery and cover terminal with insulating material.

Place steering column in down and extended position.

Remove left side foot well panel fasteners.

Using a plastic trim tool, gently pry left and right steering column trim panels to remove and release snap clip on column boot.

Remove instrument cluster trim panel fasteners.

Pull trim panel out and disconnect harnesses for light switches.

Remove radio volume control knob.

Insert allen wrench into slot approximately 1 mm and turn through 90".

Disconnect wiring harnesses from radio.

Remove radio.

Or you could watch this video: :=):

Eventually remembered to try the fix on the volume button, worked like a charm.

Thanks Rodga for the info...:coolShake:

My 540i had the same problem with the volume knob.
Only see this thread now. Jip - my 530d - same knobby problem, the fast turning while off works, but only for a short time.
