Hi gents

I need some assistance I've got a e39 facelift with the m52 motor...
Seems like there's some oil leaking on to the manifold and causing tons of smoke when u driving! Replaced head gasket and tappid cover gasket and problems still around?

Has anyone had something similar or knows possibly how to fix it?
And help would be appreciated.

Thanks:thumbs:

Check the if theres oil in the spark plug chamber? Did you replace the inner gasket of the tappet cover?

I have an M52 motor and had a leak from the oil filter housing - there is a little gasket there that could be leaking - maybe this could be your problem:

Here is a pic of the gasket - maybe some of the guys here have replaced one before.

Well, when doing the valve cover gasket the inner gaskets for the spark plug holes are also done and provided with the kit. But it is really odd that you would still have an oil leak after doing all of this. Can you actually see where the oil is leaking out?

But that's on the other side of the engine for smoke to be seen. Actually replaced this not too long ago on my Wife's car which has the M54...

Plus one.

Maybe the tappet cover has a piece broken or cracked.

On mine I have oil leaking onto the aircon compressor, cannot see where it is coming from but seems like the same thing/similar, ether front timing cover or hopefully not between the head and block.

It is not uncommon for the gasket not to seal well and invariably most of the leaks emanate from the rubber grommets that are placed under the washer and nut to tighten the cover.

The way we overcame the leaks is by having all new rubber grommets and setting the torque to 10NM on the torque wrench as this prevents overtightening and braking the bolts.

In addition it is advisable that a thin layer of gasket sealer is placed around the studs that protrude from the head as well as a small amount on the bottom of the rubber grommet.
