I really hope you can get sorted with this, I though it might be possible to download this (not that I have any idea whatsoever how to download these kinds of things from the internet seeing as it is illegal) but a quick search yielded nothing, and this is one case where you can't just import something because it is not available in SA, because I doubt whether it would be possible to find the SA maps from an oversees seller.

I am guessing the dealers probably charge R7k for the CD (excluding the mandatory R25k that you have to pay for a new navigation system seeing as they can't sell the CD separately even though it is priced as a standalone unit)

You might want to look at upgrading the nav system to a aftermarket one, where you have more options of the GPS software that is used, Garmaps etc.
Maybe something like this:

I am not to sure about this e39 one but I know the e46 one is made to look (plus the LED lighting) to match the OEM look as far as possible. (You can get this with SA map card)

I am seriously considering an aftermarket headunit, or even the facelift headunit, but I really want to keep the car original for some obscure reason.

I suppose a modern headunit will not kill me, and considering the my shuttle is also non existant, it is perhaps the way to go...

I can always just drop a spare garmin in the car which I have, but thats lame...

I agree the car should be kept standard, but is good to know that there are aftermarket head units out there that al least try to look OEM, and it better that having a garmin on the windscreen :)

Meh, but I am just giving possible options, the best result would of course be to come right with the OEM unit, but if that is not possible, then it is good to know that there are alternatives.

I recon its going to cost me too much cash to get the standard headunit working (cd shuttle +nav) then I still have to put in blueteeth and then a IPOD controller (as replacement for the shuttle), and sort out the nav.

It is prob going to be cheaper just to buy the headunit example, I looked at another one a while ago as well....

Besides, Im going to put in some subs and stuff, so I may as well......

Why not keep and iPad or Android tablet as your navigation. Can always take it with or store in glovebox. If you really want to, you can go pretty far in discreet integration.

k folks,

Firstly, MSM, you rock dude, came out all the way to bring me a CD copy from his X5, asnd alas, its no good.

With that, I have decided to scrap the standard radio unit, because nav + cd + bluetooth is just going to cost me too much, so its an option now between

http://www.jlevistreetwerks.com/5-S...uetooth-System-for-E39,-E53/product_info.html (tankies san)

And

http://www.stopshop.co.za/1969-buy-bmw-5-series-dvd-gps-touchscreen-ssas-bmw020-.html

I like the second option, as it supports the Garmin Nav...... and its local in stock (so they say)

Edit : Guess what, I forgot I can actually code in WinCE... so that means i can make my own software, and it integrates into the CANBus... so this could be interesting....

zaleonards, don't want to get your hopes up, but I just may be able to help you, but you gonna have to let me know, as me a bit dof with these kinda things. Some years ago I had a e39 M5 with Nav, which I never used, not even once. When I bought the car, it came with the Nav CD ( I think its a CD ), sealed in its case, which I tossed in the boot. Four years later I was almost sent to heaven...maybe hell...in a hi-jacking. I escaped with my life, and my M5, but my insurance wrote the car off. Before saying goodbye to her, I took what I could, including that CD. Six months ago I tired of my e60 and "upgraded" to my old 2000 M5, sans Nav. Being really anal with originality, and liking to spec my cars with original BMW options, I am planning to fit a Nav unit into my latest M5. I have a contact who says they can do this for me. So, to cut my long story short, I don't want to give away or sell this CD but, if it will help you, and if it is possible, I am more then happy to unwrap it, copy it, and post it to you ( I am in Cape Town ). Let me know, and I will dig it out of the M5's boot tomorrow, and check with you if it's the right CD you are looking for. Cheers.

Sith,

Awesome man, I really do appreciate the offer. But MSM has already done so for me. THe nav in the X5 and the E39 of that area was the same. Im fairly sure the unit is stuffed, in all fairness its 10 years old...

I am happy running around with a spare garmin under the seat for now.

By the way Don, your opinion on the stopshop units have NOT gone unnoticed... im keeping that in mind.

Cool, no problem. Those BMW Navs were not that good to start with, and now are so dated. The Garmins and Tomtoms of this world are streets ahead, I am just always trying to be so damn original. If you change your mind though, just let me know.

Leonard, just be careful of stop shop, I have heard some not so nice things about them and some of the stuff they sell, so just be sure of what you are getting before you pay for it, well U guess that pretty much applies to anything :).
