E39 M5

Hi All

I own a BMW M5 E39.

I need the following spares if someone could help me to source.

1.] My Vanos is making noise, on idle either on cold start or when engine is on running temperature. I would almost say that on the cold start my Vanos diesel sound is less noisy. which parts do I need here.

2.] When I go slowly forward or reverse, there is a metal on metal sound(high pitch), I think it's maybe the coupling on the propshaft.
If you agree that this is the case, is BMW dealer the best option.

3.] when I turn sharp left or right, there is a clapping noise from the front. I think it is the tie rod ends, both sides. If this is the only parts you think needs replacement where do I find it and what else should you think I must replace.

4.] The M5 is misfiring under 2000 rpm, I have ordered a set of airflow metres, any suggestion on what else might be needed. Car is booked with BMW for a diagnostic to check timing sensors etc.

5.] Rear suspension is or just feels loose through corners. On straight line there is no noise, but through corners suspension is like grinding.
Do I need the full sway bar or just the bushes. Do I just need the draglink that goes with the swaybar. Don't know if draglink is the right word for this part.

6.] My drivers window suddenly got stuck today, any suggestions please?

Regards

I know these things is discussed here somewhere, but please, I just want some cleansing on my car,

Shooo but your in for a bit of a repair bill there bud.

1. Live with it, what happens is that there is a piston inside the vanos that wears out over time, and it actually rattles in the cavity, to fix this, you can either take out your vanos and send to Dr Vanos overseas for a refurb, or buy 2 new ones from BMW at scary prices. Nothing is going to break...

2. Have all of your suspension bits tested, this could be a prop coupling yea, but could just as easily be a shock tower rubber. A decent suspension center can assist here,

3. See 2, and possibly could explain 2 as well,

4.Airflow meters as you know are expensive, search the forum a bit, I believe that their are airflow meters from a Landrover or something that cost half the price and is exactly the same thing.

5. See 2 and 3. I recon what you do is order from overseas every suspension rubber that you can find, import it, and give it to a decent company to put together, your car will feel way better, and should solve a lot of issues.

6.Your satelite door module(the actual switches in the door) suffers from dry joints, its a known issue, Is the motor engaging at all/clicking/grinding, if not, let them check and touch up the solder joints in that module.

which overseas sites is the best to use, to order items.

The car is going to BMW for a check up and report but not a fix.

Check with Maranor on the forum. I remember him gaving some vanos kits.

I don't think Moranor has Vanos seals for the E39 M5 (at least he posted about this just the other day), maybe Dr Vanos (also what he suggested) online??

Hi guys

Me again.

The more I look at the e39 m5 I bought, the more problems I see.

I need to replace tie rod ends, control arm/bushes front, and control arm bushes rear, for my e39 m5.

Then I need new front discs, with pads, and new shocks.

Is there anywhere local where I can find this stuff.

Then when I drove slowly forward or backward, there is a clinging noise, in the back, workshop says it is the rear propshaft coupling, I feel it is the diff, that needs overhaul. does anyone in sa do these diffs, please let me know.

There is something else on the rear suspension that needs replacement but I forgot the name. Is there someone with e39 experience that can name the e39 m5 parts that needs replacement.

Front discs, agents only 2500 per side (i feel your pain)

Pads I would recommend OEM, I did a set of EBC's on them, and it did not end well.

Shocks you can actually use a set off the E39 540, bit of a softer ride (which is not a bad thing) and its cheaper

If its a 3.15 open diff, you should not really have any trouble with it, the technically do not go, If its the LSD, well then "life's gonna suck when you grow up"

I have seen more often then not, the rear diff bushes being the issue, sorry bud :(

Check diff bushing before you overhaul the diff!! Rear brake pads you can get from ferodo (the ones I removed on mine were). OEM R800 for the set. Same as the X5 E53 and a few other non-M cars.

bud, i also owned an e39 m5 for 5 years. Just sold it in december.

From the beginning i'm gonna tell you, don't kid yourself, it is relatively expensive to fix, and can be done in stages and over time, if you love the car that much.

The pleasure you get out of driving an M5 is quite rewarding.

Keep to OEM on the brake discs and pads.

Prop couplings can be bought at Goldwagen, and will eliminate majority of the vibrations you're feeling. (before you tackle the diff)

wouldn't recommend 540 suspension parts, because it is still a big car, and imo , you need all the handling help you can get ( If you like to touch that ASC button for some ..... gandum style :joy:)

Oh yes, the click click noise you hear , I'm convinced is your year diff mountings. I replaced my prop couplings and diff mountings at the same time, since they influence each other, and the whole job cost me about 6k including labour.
Drop me a pm if you want me to refer you to a guy in PTA.

Again, if you're patient , and its not your daily drive, it can be restored.

Goodluck.
