E39 M5 Power loss

I’ve been noticing a considerable amount of loss in power on my M5. The induction noise is also different than normal, not sure whether the noise is from the induction or throttles though. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

But your first call in this case is a diagnostics...

Probably your MAF sensors have gone bad. Very very common problem on the E39 M5's. That or your crank sensor.

Had the same problem, I replaced thermostat, temperature sensor on thermostat housing and My MAF's were also shot. Car now running better than before.

If there is no problem with your temperature gauge then it is a big possibility that your MAF's are on their way out. PM me and will see at what price I can get them now.

had exactly the same problem 1min the power is there and the next its gone and that funny noise in the induction.changed the mafs and cps sensors and the car was perfect.bought the mafs from bimmerzone paid R2970 for the set and thats including posting packaging and customs.the only snag u gotta wait about 3weeks for arrival.

So what you gents are telling me is that this is a "shelf purchase", and I need to bring some in regardless..

Aparantly the landrovers (a specific model) uses the exact maf, and that they are bucket loads cheaper.. will do some homework..

True on the Landy thing. I know the EGR for instance on my E47TU is to be found on similar landy oiler motors.

I know that the MAF for the ML55 AMG is R1600 at the merc dealers, cheaper than you can get it from Midas. Why we get so terribly shafted, I do not understand. I think its about R13k for a set of MAFs for the M5 from the stealer...

If your MAF is the same as the e39 540i, M62TU, you can use a VW one. I just bought the VW bosch one for R800.

I bought directly from bosch think it was around R1600.00 for both. You will need to take the MAF Sensors out of the housings and place it into the housings that are in the car.

Yes you must just check if you need a 6 point or 5 point torx security driver !

I doubt its the MAFs.
Bad MAFs make it lazy, but the induction sound will be normal.

You say the induction sound has changed?
A "blatty" induction sound is one (or more) of the CPSes.
(Camshaft Position Sensor)

Typically the exhaust CPSes fail, especially if they're still the originals.

Get the fault codes read before you spend money on sensors or MAFs.
But I'll bet it's a CPS.
There are 4 CPSes. Two per bank, one for the intake camshaft and one for the exhaust camshaft.

I had a failed Exhaust CPS.
Sherwin kindly read my fault codes for me, and it had logged the following errors:
11 - AVANOS2-Hall Sensor
162 - Synchronisation CS-Sensor 2 with KW

So you're looking for something about a failed VANOS Sensor, and another about a synchronisation problem between the CPS and the crankshaft.
(AVANOS2 = Auslass VANOS = Exhaust VANOS, of Bank 2)
Different systems will give you different error explanations.
If you're not sure, post the error codes here and we'll solve them.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Did a diagnostics test at Savspeed on Friday and Animosity you are spot on with your diagnosis. Now I’m just hoping to get it fixed this week.

Awesome - glad it's nothing serious.
Faulty CPSes is one of the most common faults to have.
Easily remedied.
I'd recommend that you replace both of the exhaust CPSes.

I replaced mine myself.
It's not a bad job, provided that you can get your car up onto jack stands.
I think I paid R1100 each from BMW, with a discount.
