E39 M5 just dies while driving on freeway.

Hi guys

It has been a while since I've posted anything on the forum due to work commitments.

While driving on the N1 yesterday afternoon, I decided to turn on the aircon and the car just stalled without any warning. I managed to get the car to the side of the road and tried starting it with no success. The car idles for about 2-3 seconds and just dies.

I'm not sure if turning the aircon on had anything to do with the car stalling or was it just co-incidental?

My mechanic came out to assist and concluded that it is the fuel pump. Is there perhaps a suitable replacement pump which I can use instead of getting one from the stealers?

I am not mechanically inclined but isn't there a relay or any other easier method to determine whether or not it is indeed the fuel pump? I really don't wanna spend money unnecessarily only to find that it is something minor.

Any assistance or advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Let your mechanic check the fuel pressure it could just be a fuel filter that's blocked if the pumped died the car will not start at all (idle for 2-3 seconds).

Silly question,

Have you checked that your battery terminals are tightened properly, and that your battery is in good shape..

Hi Zaleonardz

First attempt to start the vehicle, the car idled for about 2 seconds and died. Checked if battery terminals were tight, and yes it was. Second attempt with foot flat on the accelerator the car just spluttered and died.

I will get the battery tested just in case?

Thanks

Problem solved, turned out to be a faulty relay and not the fuel pump. Thank you for the advice once again.

Shew,

You may be relieved, I would have had sleepless nights.

I am very relieved with the fact that I did not have to spend money on a new fuel pump. Moments like these that makes you appreciate being a member on this forum. Thanks once again guys.
