E39 DVD and Navigation Unit Options

Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my centre console with a bit more functionality. So far, I've only been able to hunt down two units.

Dynavin

SSAS-BMW020

Are there any other options out there?

You wont go wrong with the Dynavin unit, played around with one of these fitted to a E39 and its fantastic. The problem is the price being called by whoever has them here is SA. A buddy of mine got his on e-bay, and worked out to < 4K with shipping.

I dont see the OBC function on those.... Do you loose it?

I was quoted 650 Euro's, including shipping from Dynavin directly. The unit ships from Germany, so I'll probably sit with import duties.

Minimum I'll be paying is R6200 for the unit.
Read some really good write-ups about it and fits the BMW's nicely.

@rick540: If I replace my head unit the OBC shouldn't be affected? My outside thermostat, consumption etc etc is all displayed on the dashboard. Unless I'm missing something?

You lose the OBC display on the head unit, but its retained in the dash display - No resetting of fuel consumption etc (I didnt really play with the unit too long so I could be wrong, was more interested in the other functions). Most E39's have LCD ribbon failures on the dash, so would be wise to change the ribbon and have all pixels lit up after completing the change.

Yes, but as far as I know the only way to program those functions is through the on screen OBC. Like reset fuel cons/mileage/limit/arrival time etc.

I'm very keen on one of these but that is the only thing holding me back till I know the OBC works on it.

I have something else up my sleeve in the mean time, in terms of an E39 M5

Comparing the 2 units though, Dynavin seems to be the better one to go with. Are you also considering a system like this?

can get you one similar to mine.R6500 includes a reverse camera.

Will that fit the E39 Dash? Do you have a pic of it instaled? Who makes them?

Should be for all E39's. Otherwise drop a mail to the guys over at Dynavin - I've had good service from them Give them your BMW model and they'll tell you if it'll fit or not.

Was looking at Dynavin till the price went up each time I communicated with them. Was around R7500 on advertisement then 9500 with email1 then 10500 with email 2 so I quit
