E36 unlock issue

Ever since the botched attempt at getting a new key made for my e36, an odd issue has developed. Since the transponder on the key no longer works, it is necessary to use the key to unlock the car, however at times you can insert the key in the lock and turn the key, but the car will not unlock. Typically, when my dad gets the local bmw mechy to look at it, the car unlocks perfectly.

Any idea wtf is going on?
This is with the original key btw

Had issues with my key as well...I can only unlock it with the button on my key...and at times it took awhile to work...a bit worrying.

What year model is it? When I had problem with EWS I would unlock and lock without any problems, maybe the production differs with my car's.

Does the key unlock the car from the boot ?

This problem isnt constant. It happens randomly. When it refuses to open, you cannot unlock the car from the boot either.
Its a 94/95

Take it to BMW to reprogram.

They reprogrammed my E36 key when I was completely locked out, Cost about R150 about 8 yrs ago, must be much more now.

Does it happen with both keys ? I can open the car with the remote , the key sometimes battles if I try lock or unlock it ....maybe worn .
Battery in key ?
There is an initializing procedure in the e36 handbook pg 25-27 .

Only have one original key with transponder, and the spare key. Will ask my brother to try the initalization procedure. Long distance troubleshooting FTL

Ok, procedure does not work.
This weekend my mom tried to start the car, and it refused. no lights on the dash, nada.
This morning the mechanic came over to have a look, and it behaves perfectly.

Is my car haunted? :fencelook:
