e36 reset switch

hey people,

I am gonna be servicing my e36 328i on saturday and was wondering if anyone has a link to how you reset your service counter on the dash.

The last time i did this a friend of mine used a paper clip but I need to know which two connectors he merged and for how long.

Anyone know?

Put ignition to pos 2 then Bridge for 4 seconds to reset oil light, 10+ seconds for inspection.

N.B. Light is only reset when bridge is removed.

So do i need to turn off ignition after the 10 seconds then remove clip then start engine, or can I just remove the clip while the ignition is in pos 2 after the 10 seconds?

If you use this method there is a very high chance of frying the ECU if you get it wrong,the other thing is you'll also screw up the mech and will not be able to use diagnostic equipment through that port anymore....My advice would be to pick up a proper reset tool for around 100bucks :thumb:

I did this a few times on the E30... just connected the wire, turned ignition on.. waited a few seconds.. then turned ignition off & removed wire.. but there is a chance of frying the ECU... so you have been warned

Rather get the reset tool, or give ZAleanardz a wimpy meal & ask nicely to reset for you

but see, a reset tool is a waste of time, the diagnostics are there for a reason... to diagnose whats wrong with your car.

The reset tools do work, the cable method does work, all that the reset tool does is emulate exactly what your doing with the wire, but what you want to do at service time is to actually have your car diagnosed.

If your car is running lean constantly, you could have a faulty lamda probe, which means that you could be destroying your egnine internally, silly example, but its possible.

You would be astounded at the amount of technical data saved and recorded about your car even from E36/E32/E34 era. I have not ever tried anything earlier, but I believe even the E24/E30's had proper diagnostics systems..

Make a plan and have your car diagnosted, even if its just for pure interest.

I am more then willing to do a quick scan of your car in the evenings after work, and I dont charge anything, and there are many guys that also have the tools...

Not sure about E36's there but here(UK) they came with waterpumps which have plastic impellars which are known to break up and basically f..k your car.I would advise getting one with metal impellars,if it doesn't have one :thumbsup

I have no clue about the water pumps. I'll make sure its inspected tho
