E36 rear wheel bearing

Hello everyone.

Need help with my e36 again......
Trying to remove the rear left wheel bearing.
I've taken everything off and out including the ball bearings on both sides of the bearing.
The problem is the outer race of the bearing, this thing won't budge, I've even gone as far as moer hom. And not a budge.
Any one replaced these bearings or has any idea on how to get this out?

Hey Gazza, I've replaced our 120i rear wheel bearing, and it was a energetic job! I had to make up a special tool for this.
BMW make these bearings to be fitted and stay there for ever. :hammerhead:

If you in CPT somewhere, I might be able to assist, depending on the kind of bearing fitted to your car.

Hi There...

If you have overlooked what Danieljames has pointed out, problem solved...

However - if you dont come right, my uncle taught me a fancy little trick with a welding machine. Simple concept really...

If the outer race is still in place, don your/or friends welding machine...Make sure you have a proper earth, and give the outer race a nice fat blob of weld on the face thats exposed, make sure not to touch any part of the carrier.

The heat will, expand the metal - although this is not the aim, the aim is to heat the outer race, and the spot where you welded on, will shrink the outer race as the weld fuses and restructures the metal structure, simply tap the outer race out.

If i didnt have a similar issue, and have someone do it in front of me, I would never have believed it...it works!

Let us know what happens.

Hey team.
Yeah circlip is out, went according to workshop manual, watched some clips but yeah, I'll try the weld move when I get back to jozi. Will let you know if I come right. I'll check the video clips posted hope it's not one I hadn't seen yet.

:RedNo: be very careful with welding machine as you could blow some electronics, take of any connections to Battery first.
you might see if you can get a puller first from midas.

I use the small angle grinder and make a bunch of cuts to weaken the race, being careful not to damage the hub. Eventually it will tap off with a hammer and chisel.

Good morning fanatics....
Ok so I managed to get the outer race out.
Drill
3 times grind stones
Old flat screw driver
Moering tool aka hammer

Once I ground through the race I attempted to try bend the race inwards making it smaller......at this point the race shattered pretty much pushed itself out. When it shattered it shot pieces all over so wear safety gogs but a little tap and it was out

Right next thing, install new bearing. Will upload pics and so on.....

Hey Gazza,

Be super sure to purchase 1 times bearing puller.

Do not, and I mean, DO NOT Hammer the new bearing in...be it on the inner or outer race...you will find yourself replacing these bad boys again.

Rubber or fiber mallet should help you get it lined up nicely without hurting the bearing....and then use the puller to pull it in. Pullers can be placed on the inside or the outside by simply swinging the arms around.

Adendorff(Tooltime.co.za) have some pullers at reasonable prices.

Hope this helps.

Ill be sure to do some puller shopping..... problem was the pullers I had couldnt work as I had nothing to press against. ........ next option was to remove trailing arm and have it pressed out.....but thats no fun. All ready made a tool to press the bearing in if I dont come right with the mallet.
