diy E36 M40 8v

Hey I really need some help, iv got a BMW E36 1995 318i airbag spec I have changed the engine due to the head been damaged was the 16v , but the engine I put now is the 8v M40 I had a manifold problem as dey were different but it started now that I made a branch, it started again but it was leaking petrol so I switched off and changed that pipe had to take the intake off for that put it back the car won't start just cranks, the plugs are getting wet but I tested for spark , there was spark it sumtimes sounds like it wants to start once or twice at a crank but doesn't and also back fires very loud, timing is on the marks and I checked the cam timing while opened it is sitting lobe 7 taking lobe 8 leaving so I'm out of options now yet never have issues please help?
