e36 M3 propshaft vibration

Howsit Guys.

My propshaft has a vibration and doesn't want to go away. It all started when I replaced the centre bearing and housing. Ever since from 80km/h there's a drumming/shudder at the back. The propshaft has been balanced 3 times and still no luck. They also turned it 180 and it got worse. What should I do? Balance it again? Check the alignment? How does 1 do this? Of should I fit shims on the gearbox cross member or the centre bearing housing?

Yes its all ok. The guys messed it up when they seperated the shafts to change the centre bearing. Prior to that everything was fine.

I have a similar problem with my car. Some suggested the tyres, and even the flywheel. Mine only vibrates, when the car is under "load conditions", e.g. uphill or level road.
Did you replace the univeral coupling between the propshaft and the gearbox ?

No I didn't. The stuff that I have done is new rear tyres, had all four wheels refurbed, new rear trailing arm bushes, new rear upper and lower control arm bushes and wheel alignment. I'm quiet certain its the propshaft

i use to have a e30 that did just that after fitting the new centre bearing the vibration started struggled a long time to find the problem in the end it was the bush on the front of the propshaft that goes into the gearbox i baught one from bmw fitted it and after that everything was fine

I went to the propshaft place this morning. They say that the propshaft cv has play and needs to be replaced.

So what do I do? New CV from BMW which is out the price range or re-man this CV with new bearings and machined knuckle?

I bet they didn't align the dots on the prop shaft when they re-assembled everything. It should not be necessary to re-balance the prop shaft. Now it has probably caused damage to other parts of the drive train. :thumbdo:

So I bought a new cv from BMW a will be changing in tomorrow along with the diff pinion seal. Has anyone changed the pinion seal before. How hard is it and what should I look out for? How do u set the backlash on the bearing?

Hope this will sort your problem out, since you've tried everything else.

Pj, please triple check what Speedy is saying here, if the dots don't line up then the U joints are out of "phase" with each other and will cause speed dependent vibration...

Dots are lined up guys. 100 percentage its the cv. Now if in turn the shaft if the car is in neutral you can see the play on the cv joint. Anyways I'm more worried about the diff pinion seal and setting the bearing.

Fitted a new cv yesterday but still there's a drumming after 140km/h. I don't know what to do now. Could the diff have a vibration? Anyone know where I can get a second hand shaft or back piece for a m3 4 door?
