E36 first service

So I wanna do a service this weekend on my 92 325i E36, and would like to know what you guys would consider to be a service. Basically, what I'm asking is what parts would have to be replaced at this stage.

Also, the stock engine has 186k on the clock and a friend suggested I only use a synthetic oil as the other oils clog up the lifters. I would like a second opinion from some of the experts on the forum about oil choices.

And lastly, once my service is done, who could I go to in the Southern Suburbs to get the service lights reset?

Cheeers mana!

Seeing as its the 1st service that you are giving the vehicle, I would suggest replacing the following:

1. Oil Filter (OEM)
2. Air Filter (OEM)
3. Fuel Filter (OEM is pricey though iirc)
4. Oil (Liqui Moly top tec 4100 is always good)
5. Spark Plugs (NGK or Bosch, Depending on what spec your engine requires/has)
6. Cabin/Pollen filter (Located under the dash, drivers side i think or vice versa)

Check for any leaks in pipes etc and you should be good to go. Dont over tighten anything and take your time about it.

Good luck :coolShake:

All of the above and I would also look at the coolant mix and get that refreshed, brake fluid, check the belts and perhaps get the codes read to check if it has any errors on the sensors etc.

Service is sooooper easy on that car. I have a 95.

To reset the service lights short out pins 7 and 19

First pin 19 then 7...... For not longer than ten seconds with the car 'on'..not the engine running....With all the dash lights on.

Google e36 service light reset and go to the 'e36 blog'

micro filter is on drivers side, under the dash. I learnt the hard way by stripping out the whole glove box before. And as mentioned resetting service light is super easy. Good luck

Jurre, now this is service with a smile. So I have my work cut out for me this weekend. Just one thing, the brake fluid in there seems a bit.... eeerm suspect. Is it possible to drain that or will I have to bleed it through one of the tit's, I mean nipples.

perhaps get the codes read to check if it has any errors on the sensors etc.

I pressed the code button and nothing comes up, is that all good then?

Thanx so much guys, it's so appreciated :ty:

that code button is not for reading codes. If I'm not mistaken that's like a security code before the car can be started?(citation needed)*lol.

You need to have her plugged in (read:diagnosis) to read the codes.

I think you could do a stomp test aswell but I can get that shit to work

I couldn't get that shit to work

Sorry, I meant to say the "CHECK" button. But thanx for clearing that up. It's a neat little feature though. Having a code before starting the car, hehe.

There's an oil thread with a k@k load of info. I use a 5w 40 in my 325i. It's supposed to be a hydrocracked oil not synthetic

Unfortunately you in Cape Town or I would have helped:sorry: also because you are not aware of how the car was maintained previously I would suggest an oil change with engine flush for the next 3 services and reduce the interval to 10 000km  there after you can service at 15 000km intervals or 1 year which ever comes first. My M50 has 380 000 km on it:rollsmile: with regards to oil I use castrol magnatec in mine:coolShake:

To answer your brake fluid question you will have to drain the fluid from each caliper. If you just drain the tank you still have old fluid in the rest of the system. I'm sure there are videos on YouTube for your specific car.
