Beautiful day was just spoiled about an hour ago...all of a sudden out of NOWHERE the front windows won't wind up. Every other switch works; rear windows, sunroof etc. It's almost like a window lock is engaged but my car doesn't have that...or does it???? It could've at least have the decency to roll up and then malfunctioned, at least then the windows would be closed...what can I do/check, I can't use the car like this :argh::argh::argh::argh:

Well....

I had a similar issue on the E39, mine turned out to be a dry solder joint on the window switch module.

What you can do,is you can directly apply 12Vdc to the motor to wind it up.

Alternatively, if the motor is shot, you can turn it by hand until it fully closed :)

Thanks guys, will check in the morning. But out of curiousity shouldn't ALL the windows die, why just the front ones?

This happened on my dads SGLi Skyline many years ago, all the windows would just stop functioning out of nowhere, and would just as weirdly randomly operate again...never knew what the cause was and somehow it stopped malfunctioning forever!Strange...

The e36 has seperate fuses for front and rear windows -just checked on the fuse box lid - pulled fuse 14 out and front windows were dead !!

Thanks Ray, you called it  Fuse 14 was dead, swapped in the sunroof fuse (same rating 30A/32v or something :fencelook:) and voila, I have a usable car again  But the passenger side one-touch up/down function doesn't work anymore :thumbdo: Any ideas??

The one touch on my e36 also stopped working occasionally. Normally it would start working again in a few days. If was never consistent enough to actually repair. I would try some contact cleaner on the switches first if it persists.

I had an issue with the one touch up on my drivers window, but after taking out the switch and opening it, I found a piece of plastic inside that had broken, I just super glued it all back together and it worked like a charm. Mind you, mine didn't even have the second "click".

Possibly a problem with the switch itself that the one touch doesn't work...

I just find it odd that the fuse and the one-touch function died simultaneously...won't stress about this though, last night I thought I had much bigger problems
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to open it up and take a look though.

It might be two unrelated problems, or something might have gone wrong in the switch causing the fuse to go....

my E36 had a the same problem, traced it to a dry solder joint in the relay, the relay on my E36 325i was located behind the glove box, requires disassembly and removal of glove box to get to the electrical bus where the relay is located.
