e36 alarm issue

so....

tonight i leave the office and notice that my 'unlock' button on my keys isnt unlocking the car. I see that the light isnt going on so I assume the key battery is out....no biggie.

I put my key into the door and unlock.....but only the driver's door unlocks....odd, usually all the doors unlock.

I open the door and the alarm goes off.

the hazzards keep going off until I get into the car and crank the engine.

Drove all the way home with no issues.

change the key battery and test the locking with the key remote...all is good.

I'm worried tho. Was this just an issue with the key battery or should I be thinking of replacing the car battery?

Why didnt all the doors unlock when I first tried to manually unlock the car with the key from the driver's side?

I might wake up all my neighbours tomorrow morning if this happens again.
awesome:nonono:

anyone had issues like this?

Thanks peeps.

Well I am talking out of experience with e46's but what you wrote seem pretty much similar to how it is with e46's. If I am not mistaken the only the driver door will open if you turn the key once, if you turn it a second time it will unlock the other doors. With locking however it should lock all the doors.
The alarm going off it also fine cause unlocking the doors manually with the key does not deactivate the alarm, so it will go off when you open the door.

I doubt whether this would show a issue with you car's battery, as the engine cranks, that is usually a good sign :)

thanks man:)

but...I dont think ive ever noticed a difference in turning the key once or twice.....maybe its because i'm so used to unlocking the car via remote.

so i've always thought that the one turn would do it.....hmmm....ghost in the machine. maybe its because she wants a service.

thanks again tho. i will let you guys know what happens tomorrow....if i get to work...lol.

just checked my remote opens/locks all doors . if locked with remote and opening with key only the drivers door opens and alarm goes off as door is opened . IMHO your remote battery was culprit .

Speaking about alarms and central locking, has anyone tried the "double lock" function ?

When you lock the car with the key, turn it once to lock and turn it for the 2nd time but keep holding the key in turn position, all open windows and sunroof will close.

My cousin showed me this with my old 328i, even while I was inside the car I couldn't get out.... lift the door pins but door won't open

Im not sure if all e36 bmw's came with this function but the 328's and facelift specs definitely did

I use it when my battery is going flat :joy:

Yep, that is the default setting on EWS. If you unlock the car manually with your key, the alarm will sound like a scorched witch until you turn the ignition. So it was because of your key battery...at least thats how my car also works.

Hello guys...

All BMW's with laser cut keys came with the double locking funtion,

E32, E34, E36 and onwards.

The E36, lock button automatically activated double lock when u lock the car.

The e32 remotes got 2 buttons, to lock, do duble lock.

I disabled my cars, door locks being unlocked with a key from outside.

If the cars alarm is active, It can be disabled via unlocking drivers door.
Cars with EWS2 will read the code from the key and disable alarm, older e36 will unlock the doors and disable the alarm from outside. Thats how they get stolen.... Mine only unlocks via remote.

If im not mistaken, the older e36 bmw's like the 325i got a key entry on the front passenger door, the 328i and newer spec doesnt have any key entry on the front passenger door.

My 1992 325i has key locks on both front doors . my 1996 328i has key lock only on drivers door . 328i can be locked or unlocked with key . Alarm will wail when opening by key after locking with remote .
