Hey Guys

So been looking for a E36 328i for the last couple weeks.
After looking/driving a few, I finally found one.

Its an auto, so not the manual that i actually wanted.
On the upside the body looks straight, no rust (that i could see) and paid what i thought was a really good price.

Problems:
1. Paint is faded really badly
2. Oil leak (looks like its just a tape cover gasket)
3. cracked headlight
4. seats need re-stitching
5. Door panels are loose
6. ABS light is on
7. Door rubbers are brocken
8. A few ugly scratches
9. Its an auto :blueCry:

First step will be to get the car through roadworthy and onto my name. i.e. fix the oil leaks.

Will post pics later.

Cheers.

So picked the car up tonight..
Besides the previous issues I mentioned, i picked up the following on my drive home:
- Brake pad warning lamp comes on
- hooter doesn't work
- check engine light comes on then goes off after a while
- warning about the number plate light comes, but its working
- one of the brake lights doesn't work

Was dark so couldn't really take any decent pics.

And the original service and owners manual

Next steps:
- replace the tappet cover gasket
- clean the motor off and check for any other leaks.
- Fix the hooter

Does anyone know if the car will pass roadworthy with the abs light and brake wear indicators on?

Updates to follow..

Cheers

If I may ask what did you pay?

Look, theres quite a bit that needs to be sorted out. some needs to be done now, other stuff can wait and be done over time.

So as mentioned, i bought the car know of a few issues. One of the them being a oil leak.

Here you can see all the old oil caked onto the head:

After a bit of clean green and a high pressure hose i can now see where its leaking..

Anyone know what this sensor is? Its hanging out at the bottom of the front bumper.

Next up is to go to BMW and get a new tappet cover gasket.

Cheers,

Hey guys

So started doing a little work on the car this weekend..

Started with trying to trouble shoot the hooter, checked fuses, relays etc. but nothing.
Took the steering air bag off and theres no power coming through for the hooter.. ended up taking the steering wheel and slip ring off..

Took it apart..

To find the film on the inside is torn..

So this explains why the hooter isn't working, and I'm assuming why the airbag light is showing as well..

Anyway, I moved onto the oil leak..
Got my new gaskets from BMW.

noticed that the rubber bush that goes onto each of the cap nuts were different..

The flat one is what i got from BMW.. checked the part number and seems correct..

While taking things apart i noticed that this was unplugged, seems to be for the vanos..

If this is not plugged in i assume the vanos isn't working??

Tappet cover off.

and old gasket removed. it hard and brittle, broke to pieces..

Gasket was leaking so bad all the plug holes were filled with oil..

decided to remove the plugs to see what they look like..
battle for almost an hour to remove no 4. because some idiot decided to leave an old rubber seal (i assume from a plug spanner) which had now turned hard.. :hammerhead:

plugs look aweful

and 3 of the plug leads are breaking up on the ends..

I then soaked all the nuts and bolts to get them clean and started getting ready to put everything back together but realised that i was short 4 of the rubber bushes.

So covered everything up and will try get the extras tomorrow and finish up.

Does anyone know where the best (cost effective) place to get a new slip ring or is it agents only?
And is the rubber bush that i got from BMW the correct one (flat one)?

Cheers

Shame that is a lot of sludge in that motor. It wasn't taken care of or serviced regularly.

Yea i know, not great. Been debating what i should do, suppose the only way really is to strip and clean.

For now, I'm putting it back together as i need to get it through roadworthy and onto my name.

Funny thing is it has a full service history, which is one of the reasons i bought it. Suppose it could have been jippo'd.
