I get 8.4l on average with mixed driving,

Its been a relatively cheap car to maintain if you service it often. I also have the iron block some of the fanatics mentioned....and I agree that the engine is one solid puppy. I think the iron block is preferred if you have any plans of sticking a turbo on it too:)

I get between 10.8 and 11.8l per 100 from mine. I have an auto and the gearbox called it a day-cost R9800 to repair.

Mine has given issues with the starter bendix, powersteering leaking and then.....

PERPETUAL problems with the vacuum system, found and repaired 4 different leaks and it started again this week with symptoms.
Symptoms of vacuum issues:Stiff brake pedal and decreased braking ability, hunting and increased fuel consumption.

However the car has 290 000kms on it and doesnt give a puff of smoke and idles so silently! Love her!

when you redid the engine...did you rebore the cylinders?
If you did, does that mean you have a 3L 328i?:)

how much would that cost roughly?

well i have had my fair share of up & downs with my 328, the biggest problem was when the auto box started acting up, but it worked out cheaper for me to convert it to manual so now its a 5 speed but still running the auto diff. Also did cam shaft sensor and air flow meter. As for consumption i get about 11.5l to 11.8l/100km to work and back in traffic and it drops to about 8.5l/100km om long runs.
My suspension problems are expected cos its lowered, and the most annoying for me is the power steering leak from the reservoir.
but 328s rule:praise:

Hello,
I get between 8.3 - 9.7L/100km, all depends on how hard my foot is. (I drive highway a lot)

Problems I had so far:
X Front control arm bushes, balljoints
X steering rack & rackends

Other than that, with regelar servicing. Your car will last...

I do between 10 and 10.4/100. Same as Zabbo, but like Freerider said. Whenever I feel like for it, its quite fun to bliksem it between robots or wherever safe. Its a high Compression motor, not for driving Miss Daisy. Finding one in a good nic is hard lookin.
