e36 328i PCV Valve

Hi guys.

From the time i got my car, it has had this weird habit of just smoking every now and again. After that it burns clean until the next '' smoke''. It is also heavy on oil, sometimes it burns through a litre of oil in about 250km, at other times the oil will last for ever. After doing some research i found out that a worn PCV valve would cause these symptoms.

My questions are:

1) If it is worn, do i urgently need to replace it?
2) What are the long term ill effects of leaving this worn valve on?
3) Can this valve lead to any component failiure if left unattended?

Reason im asking is there other things i would like to do on the car first, like rear tyres, but if this is serious, then i would do this now, and sort the tyres out at a later point.

Advice would be appreciated

Many thanks guys
