Good Morning All

I have a question, recently bought a nice look 328i convertible.

Been enjoying it all round till i hear a noise when it was standing and idling. sounds like a knocking noise like the exhaust hitting the gear box. Had it checked out but its not that.

Took it to a machanic and he recons its the fly wheel that is loose and needs replacing, also says it cannot be skimmed as its dual mass. can any1 advise me if that is 100% correct??

Also the OBC is not giving me the mileage any way i can fix that?

Please help

Hi there...

Any mechanic telling you you have a loose FLYWHEEL is taking you for a ride!!!!

A flywheel is not something that stays attached to a motor if it is loose!

Maybe get a second opinion, I also have a funny sound at idle but only when the car is cold, and i have an automatic. To me it sounds like a loose baffle in the exhaust or something.

If the fly is loose...it should give a moerse shudder when taking off

Also i dont think these cars came with a dual mass fly...I stand to be corrected on this though

It might be the exhaust flap, once the car get abit warm, give it a rev past 2500 rpm and see if it gets worse.

Thanks for the replies guys, no shuddering on take off, its only when the car stands idle. when the clutch is depressed the sound goes away. Any other thoughts?

Sounds more like a releaser bearing

Sounds like the idle gear.... my car got the same problem, you might get away by replacing the release bearing but if the sound still persists then you have to send the the gearbox to an engineering works.

Its nothing serious but that sound is quite irritating, I got quotes between 5 - 6K to fix.
