So after many nights of constant wrenching and fault finding the beast has finally been revived after sitting with the engine apart for +-5 years

Heres a quick snap of the vuil engine bay after I got her started

So yesterday I took her out for the first drive in 5 years!!

Engine was smooth, exhaust note beautiful (sort of.. got a exhaust leak), pulled like a beast, everything went smoothly until I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the cloud of smoke engulfing my neighbourhood :uhoh: I then used this ninja style smoke screen to dart home and get into the garage quick before any cops or residents could get to me :roflol: (I have videos of the first start, first drive and smoke show I just don't know how to upload them, don't want to use youtube) So then.. where do i get rings replaced and how much is it going to cost me :hammerhead: and while we're at it anyone got good o'l Gizmo's number for me?? :smilebounce: The only reason I don't want to do the rings myself is because I dont really have time to pull everything seeing how I work Monday to Saturday, Sunday is for the Mrs and family :dunnoanymore:

So before you go to the rings, has the car used any oil? does it smoke on idle? My suspicion is that all the shit that built up in the last 5 years of standing has collected in the exhaust and is burning out.

No you can smell the oil burning and its not like light smoke from things being cleared out its heavy smoke like oil getting into the cylinders

I'll give her the good old italian tune up sometime this week just to make sure it's not build up in the exhaust

not sure if this engine model has that whole PCV/CCV system.. usually those cause bad smoke issues when they get blocked, or if the valve gets stuck or seized. probably worth checking out too.

i believe there is a way to bypass it, and use a catch can system.

symptoms looks like this:

Yeah I was thinking about this, I'm going to have a look at it but I'm doubtful that it's the issue, will be tearing it down again soon to see what's what

Took off the valve cover and found myself a tasty oil milkshake, seems water and oil are mixing slightly, my fingers are pointing at an incorrectly sealed head gasket.. I'm not going to bother checking the torque of all the bolts I'm just going to go straight ahead and pull the head off (I love working on these engines so I don't mind) plus I'll have peace of mind knowing it is or isn't the head gasket either way I can check the block and everything else to make sure all is well. So after that it will be back at square one, it will go alot faster this time though as there's a lot less to do but take apart and reassemble

hope you get it sorted bud :dunnoanymore:

Thanks man, I'm sure I'll have it sorted by this weekend depending on when I get the new gaskets, these m50's are engineered so well it's such a breeze to work on, when you look at pre 2005 bmw's they're all pretty much just German legos
