E36... no cats as far as I know. Everyone gets the E36 branches for this reason but I stand corrected. I can confidently say that the E6 328 doesn't have cats in the headers.
But in those days the cats were not in the headers, but furher down the exhaust system, typically the first "box" in the system.
The first box just does not look like a cat to me, but the second one does. Thus the confusion in my mind ...

This correct. My 328 still have both cats in just after the headers before the first box. I was also surprised by this as I thought cat's only started cumming in on the E46's. Although, the E36 M3 3.2 had cat's, now that I think about it.
This car should have nice gains with a dual 57mm freeflow.
The factory single system is one of the places where BMW hid the ponies on these cars
However, I have my heart set on a TNT system (without branches). It will however have to wait a few months, as I have some other car related expenses first to deal with, 3X tyre sets, clutch, etc on my other cars.
Yes Theo, I believe the exhaust on the 323i is very restrictive. Small diameter piping too small for a 2.5L motor. And the back box seems to be especially restrictive with all manner of chambers inside.
