Hi Guys, is the gusheshe (the BMW e30 318i softop cabriolet) a major security risk?

reason being, i saw a sweet deal for a 1988 model but everyone is telling me to prepare to die if i buy this car because i will DEFINATELY get highjacked (due to the fact that it is a stunning vehicle that is EXTREMELY popular)

Please advise guys

What is the world coming to when a brother cannot drive what he loves...LOL, I think i will take it. People get jacked all the time(I have lost 3 phones to being jacked myself)...regardless of their wheels and i reckon if it is meant to happen that karma is gonna get you

Ok some details ...

318is
103kw and 180nm

Top speed
Manual - 213 km/h
Auto - 207 km/h

0-100 km/h
M : 10.2
A : 11.2

Gosh I thought the 318IS was faster than that! 0-100 in 10.2 seconds!!! I would have thought it would have done it in like 7-8.

318is is a 1.995l (or there abouts) it is the 4 pot 1.8l engine bored out or stroked (not sure which) to increased capacity. It should have been called the 320i ;) But the 6 pot already had that title. Why do it? Develope 2 engines with the same displacement? I believe it was a weight issue. The m44 should be much lighter than the 320i's motor.

It is also more compact, so if you look at the position of teh engine in the bay the engine almost sits completely behind the front axle.

e36 318i has 84 mm bore and 81 mm stroke
e36 318is has 85 mm bore and 83.5 mm stroke
e36 325i and 325is ? Well e30 325i with 2494 cc 6 cylinder came out in 1986 with chrome bumpers with m20 motor and 120 kw ( 4 door ) and 126 kw for 325is ( 2 door ) and later 126 kw for 2 and 4 door plastic bumpers from mid 1988 .From early 1991 the 325iS had a 2793 cc motor,basically a 6 mm longer stroke ( old 525e ) and 145 kw. Aluminium bonnet,door and mudgards to lose weight and diff now 3.73 from 3.64 .( commonly called evo 1 )
Late 1991 had 325iS with 155 kw and steel body panels with 3.91 diff ratio , rev limiter now 6750 rpm ( 6500 before ).

@BMW WP, As far as I know we never got the e36 325is in SA. I have noticed a few international sites mentioning the e36 325is, but I am not sure what the differences were.

Anyone know?

What failed and caused an accident?

Sorry - Dissapeared for a bit..

Was something between the wheel alignment and the tyres ( which I had endless trouble with, even after replacing them over and over ), eventually one gave out at speed.

ok hold up in the 325iS talk....

As far as I know the e30 325iS was a South African development because we didn't get the e30 M3 here. I have never seen or heard of a genuine e36 325iS. Am I wrong?

I think in 1992 when the e36 was first launched to the SA public there was a 325i coupe available. They didn't sell many and then dropped it when in 1994 the M3 came out, from then on its was exclusive to have 2doors. Then Roslyn pumped out like a billion 4 door e36's....Hence why the 4door m3 was a success, practicality goes along way in this country.

July 1994 CAR magazine road test of e36 325i coupe has
" The coupe is in fact almost three centimetres lower and a centimeter wider than the saloon . It also has a longer, lower bonnet , a shorter roof and more steeply raked front and rear screens . Its doors ( with frameless glass ) are naturally much wider than the front doors of the saloon , the sills are different and the boot lid is shorter and lower . The rear light clusters are also wider and lower than those of the four-door ."
" The test car's front bucket seats were electrically adjustable for height , rake and reach "
No mention if these seats had been used in any other e36 or where they were used .
I think e36 318iS were available in coupe oversaes, but only sedan here .
