E36 318is Motorsport differences

Hey Guys, I'm Bonez (I'm new here). :=):

I want to buy a Motorsport 318is, however, I do not know much about these cars.

What are the differences between the Motorsport I and the Motorsport II?
Also, do some Motorsport I's come with no boot spoiler? I have seen a car I like on gumtree, he says it is an original motorsport I, but it does not have a bootspoiler?
Is there any way to tell if it is a true motorsport, or just a look-alike? It does have the M44 motor.

Thanks,
Bonez

Difference is wheels and rear spoiler, thats it. Motorsport I had the double fin boot spoiler and style 18 wheels, Motorsport II had the boot spoiler with the 3rd brake light and style 32 wheels. Although I have seen many different wheel combos on I and II before.

Double fin boot spoiler.

Double fin and style 18's.

Motorsport II with intergrated 3rd brake light and style 32's.

Some people remove the motorsport I rear spoiler as it weighs 6kg and makes the boot lid quite heavy to open and some like the sleek look of one without a spoiler. Check very closely at the bootlid that the spoiler mounting holes have been closed up, there should also be 4 plastic grommets on the inside of the bootlid where you would access the spoiler's bolts. If those grommets are not there then its not a motorsport, or the boot lid has been replaced which means rear end damage.

Get the vin number and enter it into realoem.com, will tell you if its factory or replica.

That one you posted isn't a motorsport as it doesn't have the motorsport rear bumper.

Thank you very much! Even if this isn't a motorsport, would you think that +- 45k is a good price?
Thats 328i money!

I have considered a 325/328i drop top, but I am afraid of the fuel consumption

fuel consumption ain't bad. 10l/100km mixed city driving and 7.2 on high way

heavy foot usually 12.2l/100km

I might be wrong here but if I remember correctly & if you look at Gizmo's pics you will notice the white Motorsport badge on the drivers door which is on the black bead, now those were on the 318 Motorsports, but if it was a 323 or 328 individual then it had an ///M badge, like on the car in question.

Like I said I'm not sure, but I had 2 friends that were sisters one had a 318 Motorsport and one a 323 Individual the only external differences on these cars was the front splitter , the exhausts and I think those badges as they had the same wheels and were the same colour.

So my question is why have they been changed? Accident damage? Or what?

If I'm wrong just ignore this!!

Check on OLX, I saw a couple if nice ones there.

The red one looks fishy though as he keeps re-advertising it!!!

There seems to be 2 nice looking blue ones.

My best mate still has a red 318 MSII, nothing wrong with it so for him not worth selling it so uses it as a everyday vehicle. They great cars

You are indeed correct, the 318is had the BMW Motorsport International badges on the front door beadings whereas the 6cyl motorsport/individuals had the ///M badges on the beadings. The aftermarket beadings floating around are also fitted with the ///M badges.

The 4 different door badges you get.

A few small things that I can remember really well about these cars: My older brother had an original years ago when they were still in production...

He had the original Motorsport II, but one of the very first ones released, and that car for some reason had the big single fin spoiler but instead of the 3rd brake light it only had a black "Motorsport" badge on it where the 3rd brake light should be.Could of been an "BMW Motorsport" badge, not too sure as it was well over 10yrs ago and I couldn't even drive yet!!
It could even have been this "BMW Motorsport International" badge shown above, I'm honestly not sure.See the car was metallic black and I could be confusing the color of the badge with the cars' color.
I'm very certain about it being a badge and not a 3rd brake light though!

I also remember him saying that he didn't even like the big fin back then, and that he was going to remove it.He never owned the car long enough to do so and upgraded fairly soon though.

Another thing when looking at these cars is the indicators on the fenders. The version I had the old big indicator lights which had an small black section on the side and surrounding it (although the one on the first picture has a white surround which I've never seen before).
Version II had the newer sleeker indicator only and was part of the facelifted models that these models were sold as...

I hope this helps in any way...

I was just checking this pics of this car I had years back.
It was a 1995 model 328i, but it had the "M" badge on the strips on the doors, and the "BMW Motorsport" where the brake light should be.
I also had a wooden steering wheel and a armrest in the middle, and a wooden gear knob.
But the wheels? Never saw this wheels on another car after I had this one

That spoiler came out just before they intergrated the 3rd brake light into the spoiler, up until that point e36's didn't have a 3rd brake light.
