E36 318i Snapped Chain

Hi Guys, Long time since I have been on here.

My brother has landed in shit, and has been using my Fiat palio. Someone drove into the back of it a few weeks ago and wrote it off. Insurance only paid out R24k.

I have bought a 1995 318i to replace it and on my way home from collecting it now, the timing chain just snapped at 6000rpm. There is a piece of metal sticking out of the chain housing.

Is this an interference engine (Please say no, but I suspect its a yes, based on the sounds that came from the motor)?

The car had 190k kms on the clock and while that may not be genuine, the condition of the car says to me that its not far off.

What parts, aside from the Chain and the valves should I expect to need replacing?

I have been driving a Diesel for the last five years, and the sound and feel of that motor just pulled me in. It was running so sweetly until it popped :blueCry:

If I remember correctly M42/M44 motors is interference motors.

id really pursue some sort of recourse with the person you bought it from... if i were you. that engine might cost more than its worth to rebuild

It was a private sale, and bought as is, so there are no returns.

As much as it sucks for me, and im pretty angry right now, I can hardly blame the guy who sold it to me.

How could he have known this could have happened?

If you sold your really clean car to someone and 20 mins later they called and told you the motor just grenaded, and you must refund them and take the fucked car back? You would tell them to get buckled.

I picked the car up for R30k. Complete second hand motors are between R6.5k - R9k , so its going bite, but it wont kill me.

With the amount of cars I have seen recently being sold for R45k+ that should be scrapped, not be for sale, ill rather fix this old girl up.

News just in. The chain did not snap. There is a large grub screw, about 40mm long that worked its way out of somewhere and smashed the housing and got chowed by the chain.

Im not sure why the car died when it happened, but the engine still runs.

Is there a knock sensor on this car that perhaps caused it to shut off?

M42 has dual knock sensors.

I have a complete m42 2.1lt for sale with a shit load of spares to almost build a 2nd motor.
