Howzit guys, I test drove an e34 540i Auto on Thursday.

Just have a quick question, the auto box changed at roughly 4000 rpm when in normal driving mode and foot flat.

When i put it into sport it changed at the redline, is this normal?

I am indeed, there is quite a nice one at a dealer in Randburg.
The box still changes smoothly, motor still has power even though its done 275k kms. All electronics work.
There is evidence of accident damage though, and its a lil bit out of my price range.

Gonna keep me eye out for another 1, not realy in a rush to buy

If your worried about the box, dont

Uber has a spare one in mint condition.

My old box is promised to clutchy, but his box is also in good shape, it just needs a valve body, we can sort you out man, get it, I still think its the most exciting car you can buy for very little money and maximum fun.

Hmm.. you going to get rid of the E46 or buy the E34 as a second car?
What year and how much are they asking? if you don't mind me being nosy...

If you do find one with box problems, as LZ said...i have a good one sitting in me garage...:)

Thanks for the offer LZ, WHEN i get one il be nagging you guys for lots of help! :)

Im going to keep the E46 as a daily drive and the 540i will be my weekender/toy/project car.

They are beastly cars, you get a lot of car for the money.

The one I was looking at was a white '93 Auto 275k kms FSH from agents, asking price is R39 950

I was realy impressed after the test drive.

Uber, dont you have any 540's lying around??

Deano.. thats way too much man.

Go hit the junkmail, I found a couple for under or about 20k

I spent to date less then 25k including the manual swap, will be just over 30 when I get me new wheels.

well... If 2 x 520's make a 540, then i do.:)

seriously, if i do come across a decent one, i'll let you know.

R40k is a bit much for that year and mileage too.

dude, nice.
I think soon we can have a seperate E34 540i club. because so many of us have one allready, there are 3 E34 540i's standing at uber's house at the moment. lol, Ubers, his dads, and mine.

De@n0.. when u get one u want.. just make sure its EWS works and check the back of the engine for any water and oil leaks.. and oil leaks from GBOX, just to save yourself some trouble, Uber will know well what to look for there...

sorry for my absence lately, been abit busy this side.. taking over the eastern cape here.

You may want to come visit us, we miss you, else we will be forced to beat you excessively using a VW cam belt and a spare bunny rabbit

Actually Deano, I did not see the Randburg part, if you want me to go have a look at it with you during lunch time, I would be more then happy to oblidge, and I'll tell you if its worth 40 or not.

hey guys can somebody put up a list of items to look out for on the 540i auto
What manual 5 speed gearbox fits ? ( 525i etc-same as e36 325 etc ? ) Engine life ?
Saw one on junkmail with engine noise/problem - bye bye plenty money :bawling:

Hi Ray,

The gearbox's are essentailly the same between the E36 and E34, HOWEVER, the bellhousing is differant for the 540, you will not be able to mount up a transmission frrom an E36 or even a E34 525.

The only box that is compatible is the M60 manual, found in the 530, or if you are lucky enough to find the super rara 540 6 speed box, and if you do, both me and uber will fight your for it :)

What kind of noise, top or bottom. If its heads, they are prone to a bit of lifter noise. I am going to rebuild both my heads in the near future, but if its big ends, then your in for some trouble.

Id over 6k for the car, tell the guy you are going to part it out., or look out for one witha stuffed box for 10 to 15,

Hey Everyone
Am I glad to have you'll for company - thought I was the only E34 540i fan in the country! Mine's a mint 1993 Calypso Red with 125k km. Bought it in 1997; Alusil conversion done while still on Motorplan. Car is absolutely stock - even has original exhaust system. It's running sweet, but after 17 years I think the transmission fluid needs refreshing - agents keep telling me it's a sealed unit etc etc. I'm not much of a DIY person - does anyone know anyone in Durban who can service the ZF5HP30?

Rumble... You can... tis easy man :)

You will need.

4 tressels
The star type screw bits (Torx heads, I think it takes an E12 if I am not mistaken)
New Filter (Buy OEM, its like R700 from the stealers, but worth it, I can get you a part number. comes with a new seal)
20 Litres of Donax Tx Oil
2 Allan keys
Hand pump.

The tools will cost you like R500,
Dont know what you are going to pay for the Donax TX, but Uber has had awesome results with it, and it beats the hell out of the Shell LA 2632 (going from memory so dont know if it is correct), but the specified oil from BMW which is like R1000 for 5L.. you do not want to do that.

That and a saturday afternoon, and your sorted.

I have a thread on the forum about the process, hit search, tis a really easy job, and i'll give some advice if you get stuck..

GO for it man.... Doooo itttt....
